llebpmac,

Welcome!

Are you looking for recommendations for a new vehicle, or are you interested in buying a used one from someone on the forums?

Hard to say what fuel will be like in a year or so. If I was back in the midwest, looking at gas powered vehicles, I would look at a flex fuel (E85) pickup truck. But, diesel would be my first choice. They are expensive to start, but do pay for themselves and then some, over time.

Trailblazer (extended version w/V8), E85 Suburban, or a diesel pickup or SUV all with between 125"-135" wheelbase (or longer).

For what it's worth, we pull a 2006 25' Safari that may weigh a bit more than yours with a 2005 Dodge Durango all tricked out with the tow package and every other option except the DVD player. We also have the standard rear axle ratio and with that combination we regularly get 12.5 to 13.4 mpg on regular gas while towing. Around town we get 17+ mpg and our best mileage on the highway has been 23.8 mpg. Not bad for a 5,200 pound 4-wheel drive automatic transmission SUV that is short enough to serve as a daily driver.

I believe that most people would suggest buying used rather than new. Let someone else take the depreciation charge driving it off the lot.

Good hunting. Lots of choices.

Rumor has it that GM dropped the 8.1L in the 2007 SUVs. If true, this might be another reason to buy "used".
