The Newbie

Hello Airstreamers,

I am a recently retired codger, with a bride who will retire next May. We have a boater home (CDory), but would also like a comfortable travel trailer. Diana and I have long admired Airstreams, but know absolutely nothing about them, hence the post.

I do not have a sense of the "trim levels" for the various Airstreams, can anyone point me in the right direction? Are there models that seem to have more problems than others? Are there hidden little places that harbor corrosion/rust, or are subject to stress cracks? Is leakage a problem?

We will probably sell our house near town, and use the Airstream as a base when we come back to the metro area from the beach. We will also do a bit of snowbirding in either the trailer, or our boater home. I am thinking that something in the 24-26 foot range would be appropriate.

Any advice or recommendations are welcome.

Kind Regards,

Steve

Hello Steve,
Welcome to the forum. I agree with Jason, you need to decide whether or not you want a used unit or a new unit. You can go on the Airstream.com website and look at the floor plans they currently have. You can go over to Eugene and look at what the A/S dealer (Gene Sutton) has on his lot. He may even have some "pre-owned" units on his lot. The 25' unit is extremely popular and it can be towed with a Tundra or equivalent. The Tahoe is quite popular for this size also. Mine is a 28' and it takes a little larger unit. I do believe you need to research it and take a look at what the dealer has and you will get an idea of what size would be appropriate for your family.
Good Luck

New - vs - Vintage

Thanks for the replies. We will definitely be going with a vintage unit. I would prefer to buy from a private party, but a trip to Eugene may be a wise choice.

Thanks!

Steve

a lot of times you can find a good deal with just word of mouth. we purchased a 72 Overlander from a friend of a friend by asking if anyone knows of one for sell.
Good luck on your adventure
