Starting our Retirement Dream.....

Hi All,

My wife and I are looking forward to retirement. Our dream is to see Canada and USA in a travel trailer. We are in the planning and researching stage of our eventual mobile abode. We started our research last fall and pretty well have decided that AIRSTREAM is the only way to go. So, we are looking around and taking our time finding the right Airstream for us.

We are finding that there are not too many previously enjoyed Airstream in Canada, but we see a lot in USA. What are the rules in purchasing privately from USA and then bringing it back to Canada? What are the pitfalls?

Looking forward to reading all the tidbits and hints from this site...

Thanks,

Basilio and Wendy

Welcome to the Forums. We're glad to have you with us.

Best of luck in your search for the perfect Airstream. We travel extensively in Lucy, our '05 25FB. We find this size very comfort able for both long and short stays.

As far as bringing a used Airstream into Canada, I would start at the Ontario Motor Vehicle Bureau, and ask them what you would need to do. They should also be aware of the Canada Customs requirements for such and importattion.

Brian

Welcome to the Forums.

It's pretty painless to import a non motorized Airstream into Canada. You will require a valid bill of sale and you'll have to pay GST. We were surprised at how painless it was.

Good luck with your search.

Hi BasWen,

You will learn a lot on this site, I sure have.

Check out the Colonial airstream site, NJ. They have a huge inventory and I find the prices are very good.

Have fun!

Welcome, Basilio and Wendy - and best wishes on your count down to retirement.

I see you are in a spot of "Gods" country (Deep River) We are about 40 minutes south of Algonquin Park.

Peter and I did some White Water Rafting many years ago on the Ottawa River ...and lived to tell about it

We have imported 3 vintage Airstreams. Streamer 23 links will tell you all you need to know. Be prepared and have your documents ready. The only real hiccup with the process is that you can not plate the trailer and must run with documents from the Customs import office. Putting an illegal plate on can get you into some serious trouble if you are stopped for whatever reason. NO plate is better.

Importing newer models has to go through the Vehicle Import Program that is a little more complicated but still fairly routine. And the plate issue disappears as you are issued a sticker that goes in the window of your trailer until you are issued a plate from the MTO.

Good luck with your search for the perfect Airstream.

Please feel free to PM us if you have any specific questions we might be able to help you with.
