Starting Early

I've been lusting after an airstream for several years now, and came to realize it was an obsession......so now im here where I can indulge in it a little.

I'm probably a lot younger than many members here....in my second year of college....so I can benefit from your experience.

Its going to be a few years before I am ready to buy, but I am here to get informed so when I buy I wont be making a mistake.

Hope to see you all on the road as soon as I can.

Joel, you would be surprised at the #s of 'streamers close to your age, and you will find them here ... welcome!

Welcome from a fellow n00b! I know I saw a thread from a college girl in the winterizing forum, so you're not alone.

Also, I think there are a bunch of 30-somethings (including my husband and I), so the demographic spread is not super lopsided.

Welcome to AS heaven or hell depending on what your AS problem is. Remember you can start with a vintage AS that probably will fit your budget. You just need to add a great deal of time, energy and sometimes $$ but most of all the first two. Good luck

I just read that same thread.

Im still a little in awe of all the information available here...already Ive gone from my not-very-informed longing to a desire to go full-time (weather of either extreme isnt a problem here in SLO) to deciding I dont want to deal with tricky land use policies in this county.

In short....by the time im ready to buy im going to be as ready as I'll ever be with the theoreticals, ready for some practical experience with it.

welcome youngster!

many of us here are "older" in chronology only, though I wish I had gotten hip to 'streamin' back when I was your age...

but I didn't really have the tools at that point for a vintage rebuild, even if I did already have a bunch of the skills....admittedly, now both my skills are better and I can actually afford most of the tools I need...plus my trailer gives me (my wife, really ;-) a really good EXCUSE to buy new tools!

my point being that to really do the vintage thing right you'll probably need a good selection of both tools and mechanical skills....how would you rate your current ability/toolbox?

don't want to dissuade you in any way...just a head's up..

one of the really great things about vintage is that in the renov/restore process you'll have to make A LOT of design/build decisions....if you're like me you will learn an ENORMOUS amount of Airstream info in the process..

you've already found ground-zero for this process: the forums..

have fun!

I would say I am at an advantage compared to my fellow (poor) young people.

I am an architecture student, so I'm not afraid of making design decisions and implementing them. Furthermore, I have access to a very complete wood and metal shop, along with potential access to Cal Poly's extremely capable and knowledgable faculty. Between the forums for the specifics and my peers and professors for the requisite skills, Id say im in a perfect position to learn.
