RV Wannabees.

Hello everyone,
Our names are Dan & Carolyn, we are in our late fifties and we came up with our user name by the fact that I fly Bell helicopters in Canada fighting forest fires for half the year and we are planning to spend the other half of the year in a Airstream.

We are in search for a Airstream as we are semi retired and are working on becoming snow birds from the Vancouver Canada area. We are looking for a 34 footer with a queen bed, I have a 2006 GMC 2500HD Crew Cab Short box with a Duramax which has 160,000 kms, ( 100,000 miles ) I have driven semi trucks so I am not worried about the size of a 34 ft trailer.

We have met up with the chapter 10 club here in BC to pick the brains of AS owners, we have never owned an RV due to kids and now we are starting a new chapter in our own lives.

Not sure what else to say here but hope to meet many of you over the coming years.

Cheers

Dan & Carolyn

Welcome,

The 34's are sure nice with lots of room and storage. Your TV should suffice for pulling it almost anywhere. We hope you find one of your liking.

Enjoy

Welcome you picked a great size for plenty of room. There are always some great large trailers here for good prices.

In the Airstream world the smaller they get the more expensive they are.

Welcome to the forum. You will have no problems with a 34' and the Duramax. Be patient and the right trailer will show up. If you can, have a member from one of the WBCCI clubs, or one of the inspectors from this site look at a trailer with you. A critical, and experienced, set of eyes can often save you a lot of grief. Good luck, Chris

Last year of production for the 34' was 2011, 25 units were made for that anniversary production run. Last year of the 34' with a slide was somewhere around 2007/2009, and I do not believe any 34' were made in 2010. We own a 2005 Classic Limited 34' S/O and have made a few trips from New York out west to the Mount Rushmore area towing with a 2004 Yukon XL 3/4 ton Quadrasteer with no problems. Good luck with your search. Regards, Bob

Thanks for letting me know bout how a 34' tows, I meet with the local chater 10 of the WBCCI club here and the owners of the 34' convinced me that it is the way to go, the club told me to stay away from the 95-99 units because of how AS change the way they built them in those years, and the prices for those years reflect what I was told, some of the members told me to stay away from the S.O. due to leaks, I was reading that the early slides were a problem ( 2000,2001,2002) but buy 2003 AS had upgraded the seals and as long as a person keeps them clean that there is very little chance of leaks. And of coarse it adds 1000lbs to the trailer but I am not worried about the weight being in the front as I think it would help if a person was wanting to carry water in the unit.
So I am still looking for the right unit without breaking the bank.
Have you ad any problems with your S.O.?
Thanks again for your input to this newbie.

I have a 2003 Safari model 28' SO and have NOT had any issues with slide leaks or operation. I know two owners who have had to reattach their slide gasket this year (the glue detached) but neither reported issues otherwise. All my interactions with other Airstream slide owners (about 20) have been positive stories as opposed to the many doom & gloom stories I get told by non-slide Airstream owners about slide models. The early build slides you mentioned were improved by adding a locking mechanism which has an electrical controller switch that has experienced failure with age. It is an easy DIY fix to replace.

Due to the added floor space when open (~14 sq ft), the 30' slide model is marginally smaller than a 34's square footage. You may want to consider one among your choices if you can find one. Hearsay states a total production run of slides at around 84-85 units over the years; fairly equally spread among the 28', 30', and 34' lengths. The 28s are Safari models and the remainder are loaded Classics.
