Wouldn't that leak be a warranty issue? Funny you should mention fantastic fans. I was reading one of Uwes post and he kept on mentioning fantastic fans. I didn't realize that was the brand name.

Unfortunately, those are common sights in most of the shops I have visited. Many of them listed in this thread.
Most shops do nice work. MEL does stuff that has me green with envy.....
Uwe, this goes back to my original thread. Have you seen the work of these three: Craig Dorsey, David Winick or Dayton Taylor

Good idea.
Custom work is billed at about $ 70.00 -$ 100.00 per hour. Time and materials.
If it takes 10 hours to build a cabinet, then that would be between $ 700.00 to $ 1000.00 plus the wood and hardware. Good custom work is definitely not cheap. It is simply not possible to do it cheaply.

I see a Monty Python sketch in your future . . .

"Yes, I'm here to report that my Fantastic Fan is not working properly"

"Well, it must be working well enough if it's fantastic"

"No, you see it's a "FANTASTIC Fan", but it's simply not running "up to par" so to speak"

"How do you get any better than "fantastic"?"

"No, No, No, you don't understand it was made by the "FANTASTIC" people, but it's not blowing enough air"

"Well, I'm sure if they are in fact "fantastic" people then they most likely build a very good fan . . . otherwise you wouldn't be calling them Fantastic now would you . . . "

I also thought (when first reading about fantastic fans) "what a curious way to describe a ceiling fan, I mean I'm glad they're happy with their ceiling fan but "fantastic"? That's a little too enthusiastic."

okay, sorry I know I have just indulged in a blatant, even fantastically blatant thread hijacking.

I've been to MEL trailer a couple times now, once with Uwe and then went back with my wife to show her what they have done over there. So far, they have done the most incredible work I've seen. It was like seeing these vintage models when they were brand new. And I would have to agree, they are masters! Very fine work done, with lots of skill and I would have to say that their hearts are in their work.

I recently met Dayton at a rally at the Camp in Costa Mesa, CA. He was very nice, and happy to show us his work in the trailer he had with him. I thought he did a great job as well, and would also recommend his work from what I have seen.

I have had work done at Inland RV, and I was very happy with the work they did. Just axles and stuff, but I thought they were great, very knowledgeable and friendly.

When it comes down to it, it really depends what you want to have done to your trailer, and what you're willing to spend on it. My personal opinion, if you're pockets are deep enough, have MEL trailer do it for you!

Regards,
Ron

Dayton Taylor has a web site too:

Sales of restored vintage trailers like Airstream

I don't know if he's the new guy on the block or what but his name has only been mentioned twice before on the forums. And one of the times gives a rough location of his shop:

"there's a guy on the way from 79S to Tucalota Springs, sort of on the north side of the street that deals in trailers and aparently does restorations. Follow the road from the casino turnoff towards Tucalota Springs, and you can't miss it.
It is a little ways out of town, but might be worth investigating. Sorry I do not have a better address for you.
btw. We love camping at Tucalota Springs. A nice relaxing place close to wine country"

Best of luck,

Steve

Posting from Dayton Taylor of www.VintageTrailerCrazy.com

We are located in the heart of Wine Country, Temecula, CA on the way to Tucolota Springs Campground. Vintage Trailer showings are on an appointment bssis only due to a very high demand for our vintage beauties.

We look forward to speaking with you about your vintage trailer needs.

Thanks
Dayton

Bob,

I don't think that it is up yet, but you can reach him through TheVAP.com or listen to episode 104 and get his phone number.

Glad to hear it Colin. You SHOULD be working on Airstreams. Let us know when your website is up and running. We'd love to see what you've been up to.

A couple of years have passed - does anyone have any new experience or knowledge of Vintage Trailer Crazy (Dayton Taylor) or Mel Trailer? I looked at the site for Vintage Trailer Crazy and while I like what I see for sale I'm having trouble figuring out how he can make a profit, since most of his fully-restored trailers are selling in the $25,000 range. I would think that the price would be closer to $35,000. I don't know anything about trailers but I'm familiar with automobile restoration, and it's extremely hard to sell any restored classic auto for anything close to what you have into it.

MEL does good work, as does Uwe at Area63 Productions. Both in Orange, CA.

Airstream repair

We are full time RVers in a 1987 32’ Airstream Excella. We’re just completing our 9th year and have logged 95,000 miles on the trailer alone. We recently experienced a tire blowout at 65 mph which destroyed most of the skirting from the tire well to beyond the entrance door. It also separated the door frame in the forward sill, damaged a propane line, and the right side shocks.

Meltrailer (www.meltrailer.com) worked with our insurance company and restored our “home” to like new condition. The workmanship is superior, the service personal, and I highly recommend them for any type of work on any Airstream trailer and other vintage trailers. If they can’t do it, nobody can!

Previously, we had used CandG for our work. They have retired and the shop is closed. Meltrailer does much better work.
