Question Please tell me I'm nuts.

Been cooing over Airstreams for far too long a time, thinking of biting the bullet and having a go at buying one on e-bay. Its a 71 Safari, seems a good all rounder, only thing is, there is only 17hrs to go. Price at the mo is 8,100. I also have to drag it over to Australia, which I've been working on for a while now, so feel I know a little bit, can you ever know enough before a purchase? Anyone wanna tall me Im dreaming?

Hey Dave,

Welcome aboard, Mate!

'71 Overlander for at least $8+K; must be a real nice one. Olanders seem to be sought after. We're, in fact, looking at either a vintage Safari or Olander as our 2nd rig. Unless you're really in a hurry, I'd recommend that you follow some of the posts in the AS classified section of the Air Forum website. Taking you time is the key approach, IMHO.

If the Ebay trailer you're "watching" is nearby, I'd see about making arrangement to drop by for an inspection. Otherwise, you can have a member do an inspection for you if the subject rig is at a far away distant location. Bottom line, I wouldn't buy an AS "sight-unseen" as there's just too many variables that can bite you down the road - pun intended.

If you're not pressured to get one immediately and have it shipped down under, kick back and cruise the classifieds - you'll know it when you see it - in person, that is.

Hope this helps out...

Oh, shipping costs from east coast to UAE for a 31-footer is about $2k if that helps...

Unless it is really nice with updates $8100 is too much. A fair price for a 71 Safari in ok original condition is about $2500. Any improvements will add value to that amount. I know it is hard to wait but be patient and do your research!

An inspection by someone is a must in my opinion. I have looked at some that looked great in the ad, only to walk up to it and instantly see that the condition is not what it appeared to be.

Everything you are doing to get this going is what its all about...the adventure of pulling in THAT BIG FISH and living (in it later) to tell all how you did it and how proud you are. It will become a part of you and your legacy.

Thanks for all the great advice and jokes about me being nuts. Time zone made it hard to reply, but thanks guys. Decided to watch and wait, yeah I know, the Safari sold, at 13k not 8k. Best to wait a while I guess and use the help available on this forum. What is it they say about patience?

Good for you, Dave. I didn't want to be the one to say that you are nuts.
