Please Allow Me to Introduce Myself
Just thought I would check in
Hi all! I don't own an airstream but since my high school days way back in antiquety, I always admired them for their sensable inovative design. I used to see them parked @ an RV dealer along US RT 30 near Irwin Pa where I went to high school. They still have that striking polished aluminum aerodynamic appearance don't they?
I even worked in a travel trailer factory for a short time just out of high school, Serro's Scotty Trailers in Arona Pa.
In those days, the 15' "Highlander" was the top of the line. We've come a long way since then.
I was introduced to this forum by a link to 1 of Andrew Ts posts.
http://www.airforums.com/forums/549946-post28.html
It was posted on my controversial thread over on RV.Net.
Please don't misjudge my intentions by the title. I wanted to provoke discussion & was not making a statement of fact. That is why it was posed the title as a question.
Provoke discussion it did in spades!
RV.Net Open Roads Forum: Tow Vehicles: World's Fastest Tow Vehicle?
Anyway, I was happy to find that Andrew T is an advocate of using sedans & other more effecient but very capable TV set ups.
I thought that I was alone in a hostile world in my discovery of the great towing capabilities of the high powered, nimble 5.7 powered Dodge Chargers W/the handling packages.
I enrolled over here to glean even more of AndrewTs knowledge.
Here is a picture of my rig.

Welcome
Man if you can tow that SOB ("square old box" or "some other brand" is all that means) with a Charger, imagine what you could do with a 23 ft Airstream behind you. Check the classifieds here.

That's what the Power Wagon is for.
I use the Charger most of the time when I will be going to private campgroands or State campgrounds that are more RV oriented W/gravel pads & such. It does OK on turf, but you are right, it would be limited in the sand.
The Charger gets better mileage, has better emergency manuvering, braking & bucks the wind better than the truck. 20% better fuel economy hitched, about 85% better solo.
Not a whole lot of differnce in pulling power. The Charger's 3.06 axle ratio is 4.32 FDR in 3rd gear (3rd gear is a 1.41 underdrive) & the smaller 28 1/2" rubber makes it a pretty close match as far as pulling on the pavement. The ratios in the tranmission are pretty deep too Low is 3.58:1 so it pulls pretty good from the stump. The truck has 4.56 gears & 3rd gear is direct on that transmission. The truck has 32" rubber.
When I am going to the rough places as I am this Memorial day weekend, I will hitch up the Power Wagon.
I prefer short trailers, 25' or less, as I am often in tight spots & there is only Wifey & me. I don't need big tongue weight capacity. That is the real limiting factor W/the Charger.

I would like to have one of those sleek babies behind that Charger. Probably get my MPG hitched up to what the Power Wagon gets solo. (14.5 MPG)
I have looked & floor plans but can't seem to find 1 W/a slide out dinette in the shorter lengths.
