Owner of 58 unknown model - new member

Hi,

We've owned this for about six years, one of those projects on our mini-farm we've yet to work on. We've looked through all the reference books we can find, but cannot figure out what model it is. All we know is it's 25-26 feet, 1958. The shell is in great shape, but we are looking at some floor damage by the door and some appliance replacements. As we are planning on moving from a rural environment to an urban one in Oregon (pdx), we have tried advertising it, but have had so many flaky responses that we are now considering keeping it and fixing it up, even though it will be had to keep in the city.

However, since I found this group, I'm hoping that someone can help us figure out what we have, and, if we have to sell it, how we can avoid flaky buyers?

I might add, I discovered newsgroups way back in time about '96, and have lived the concept of giving back information and not just joining up to get info. Unfortunately, not knowing much about airstreams, will be giving back in other forums, like gardening, cooking, which I know more about, if that will help anyone feel better about helping us out.

Any help is appreciated.

If it is a 26' It is most likely an Overlander. The pic looks longer? Are you measuring the tip of the hitch to the bumper? If it is a 3o' it is a 30' Sovereign of the Road. Either way it looks awesome!

your trailer is same as that, but only a single door - it appears to be close anyway. Any inside photos?

Glad to help out. Always loved a mystery! If you would post the serial number, we'll be able to decode it for you and we'll know exactly what you have. It should be stamped into a small metal ID tag by the entry door. I can tell you it was made in California judging by the downward slope of the wheelwells.

Welcome to the Forums. It's a nice looking unit, but appears to be larger than a 26'. Check the data plate, and then get a tape out a measure from hitch tip to the bumper.

I'll vote 58 Overlander also. The Sovereign would have had a double set of windows by the door. California model - should have Bargman 99 tail lights according to Vintage Airstream. Interesting that dual axles was an option on that puppy. Could be a great project - hope you can keep her.

Welcome to the Forums, and thanks for sharing pictures... Serial number will nail down year and model, and even interior configuration, even though number will be short with spaces and letters in it... Lack of registration/title papers could be a problem, but solvable...

Hauling it to Portland and storing it while trying to restore it sounds like a real chore if you don't have strong family connection and detailed plans to use it... Also requires patience, persistence, handiness with tools and household repairs, and a sense of humor.. (Read some of the restoration posts here to confirm these..) You might well be money and time ahead of game to sell it to someone looking for that kind of project, and use proceeds and savings from parts and labor to buy more suitable later model unit...

Two best places to list are classifieds here (with links to lots of pictures..) and Vintage Airstream Webiste (The Vintage Airstream Club) classifieds.. With a little patience, you'll reach national audience of interested lookers. E-Bay should be last resort, as lots of flakes and hassles there these days...
