We made the plunge and purchased '74 Ambassador - having a blast cleaning and fixin' it from years of non-use. Found some cool fixes from the PO – i.e. a battery charger wired into the Uni-Volt (it actually seems to work). Already re-sealed the Vista windows and am now looking at the axels. What is the “real” need time to replace them? I have seen that when they are at 0 degrees they should be replaced, and as mine are around there I am concerned. The trailer pulled fine and I can say the axels do have some spring left, but I certainly don’t want the thing to fall apart. I would like to put off the replacement as long as possible to concentrate on making it livable……thanks!!

Take a pic of the side view of the trailer and post it here. I'll let you know if you need new axles.

That actually looks pretty good to me, although I am nowhere near an expert! From what I understand, the wheel well will be lower down the tires and even over the top part of the wheels when the axle needs replacing (when the trailer is sitting on the ground, not lifted). Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in here in a bit.

And I would actually replace axles *before* I made it livable, if it needed them, or at least do the livable mods and then the axles before I took it anywhere. If the axles need replacing, they can beat the heck out of the inside of your trailer (rivets popping, cabinets/walls separating, etc.) due to the roughness of the ride.

Thanks Susan - It didn't look bad to me when purchased, and it did pull well, but when you hear the rear half of the trailer can fall off, one gets worried. The wheel hubs are around level with the axle, which means there is some room for wheel travel,
