Now what

My wife and I just purchased a 1970 Overlander !
Now what ? It's a little intimidating to think of all the work that needs to be done!

Prioritize

Welcome to the forum.

Although you need to have tires in good shape, don't do anything with the axles right now. Spend your money on everything else first, and go camping a few times to decide if being in your Overlander in a campground is something you want to do.

In very broad strokes, I believe that the best order to do things is:
1 - Make it roadworthy;
2 - Make it safe;
3 - Make it comfortable;
4 - Make it attractive; and
5 - Make it yours by adding unique touches.

The details will depend on the condition it's in, and what your vision for the trailer's future is. I might disagree with TomW about the axles. Depends on whether the existing axles are roadworthy. If they're not, then they need to be attended to early on, or you may find your trip cut short next time you venture out.

A hollow but roadworthy shell can still be used as an aluminum tent, with nothing more than and installed floor, a Coleman stove, sleeping bags, an ice chest, and the campground bathhouse while you plan and execute all the repairs and modifications you intend to make.

Congrats!
We did some quality reading in the forums on various restoration threads when we bought our "72. We already knew we were going to complete the partial gut to a full gut, and completely redo. That's why we bought one that needed that.
If you're not sure what you need/want to do, I would spend time with it, camping if you can, to figure out what the trailer needs and you want. Some people don't want to do much, others do, or are forced into it by trailer issues.
We do love the narrow body trailers, and are happy with our rebuild, even though it took considerable time for us. Was well worth it.
Good luck!

Thank you for the replies, this is our third unit we have pretty much settled on our camping wants and needs. We pulled a pop up for a 10,000 mile cross country. Next we purchased an a frame high wall for the easy set up and towing. Now we are looking for something with a little more comfort . 0ur plan is to make it safe to use while we go about replacing all the appliances and operating systems. A full restoration for the inside is the final goal . We will be asking for help and advice regularly I am sure.
