Question Newby with tailight assembly falling out of "ARNI" 1970 overlander

On our tow home, the roadside taillight assembly came loose held on by wires. The rivets wasted away or corroded loose. Any suggestions how to reinstall? The housing was pop riveted on from back side. The 40 year old cast tail light assembly appears in fine shape but i would have to remove all interior to redo pop rivets. Cast assembly might be stretched by rivet. Any ideas?

The service manual says to reinstall the taillight housing from ouside by drilling through ouside of the housing into the shell and use pop rivets. It says to drill through the housing in the groove just inside the outer edge of the housing. Clean out all the old rivets from both the housing and the shell. Install pop rivets in the old rivet holes in the shell to seal the holes and use a putty tpae around the outer perimeter of the housing before reinstalling.

The first service manual came out for the 1972 models, which for all intents is the same as a 1970 model.
