Newbie with a '73 Tradewind and lots of questions

Hi all!

My husband and I have had a couple of vintage campers, but this is our first Airstream. We just picked up a '73 Tradewind that's in what I'd consider decent shape. It's definitely a project, but nothing we can't tackle.

What I'd love to do is a complete walk-through and learn what all is there so I can figure out what works and what doesn't. My head is spinning.

Black water tanks, pull out awnings, potable water tanks, dump stations, floor rot, switches all over the place, tambor doors that play nice and some that don't...Weird hooks in the wall, things that make me think, "What the heck is THAT for?"... And was a family of rogue squirrels living in there??

Sigh. I wish I could go out to the Airstream dealer and beg them to give me a tour of the thing. I'm reading everything I can and so far someone has left a nice little breadcrumb trail behind them for just about anything I'm wondering about, but it would be nice to just have an Airstream Orientation Class.

So it's us and 2 young ones at home. I have an 18 year old who's away at college and probably would rather eat glass than spend a couple of weeks on the road with her mom, so the full size bed in front with the 2 twins in back is perfect for us. I have dents to pull, crimps to roll out, floor sections to replace, hardener and sealant to roll, floor to put down, walls to spray, yellowed plastic to whiten.

That's us in a nutshell for now. There are pics of everything so far in the link in my signature line.

Hi everybody!

Hi Alana and welcome to the forums. As you are finding out, the answers to most of lifes important questions are contained here.
Seriously, the airstream 101 course is found in new mexico and known as the restoration rally. I will be there this year and hope to see you there.Remember there really are no stupid questions so ask lots!

You might think I am partial to Tradewinds... and you would be right! Good luck with your project! Here are some recommendations:

1. Don't gut it without a plan. I have seen a number of "for sale" gutted trailers where people bit off more than they could handle.
2. Find copies of the owners manual and service manual (eBay?, Airstream?). They show every possible component in your trailer. Worth their weight in gold!
3. Go camping! Don't worry about "whitening this", or "fixing that" before you use it. Once it's safe and functional - go enjoy life, raise a glass of wine and toast the greatness of the people you're with and the place you're at!
