Newbie requests help on identifying model

Hello folks, we just bought our first Airstream and are as giddy as children about it! It is a 26 foot Overlander and we paid the princely sum of $300 dollars US. Yes, that is three hundred dollars. How much Airstream does $300 dollars buy? Exactly what you are picturing in your head right now. It is totally gutted, has original tires (!) on it, and someone put white paint (sealer ?) on the whole top half of it. On the bright side, it pulls great, the brakes work fine, the floor is new, and it has already been rewired. One thing we don't know yet is the actual year model. The tag by the front door reads S1 26 5517. That second digit is a "one", not an "I". I think that translates to a '65 model 26 foot Overlander made in California with a double bed. But the "1" doesn't fit. Also, from looking at pictures of others, the door hinge looks like a later model as it has one big hinge half way up the door. Can anyone help ID this trailer for certain?

@NJtoNC

I am certain it is a "1". I even went back and triple checked it after looking at several web-sources for the VIN numbers. I even had my wife go out and re-confirm my re-re-confirmation. That is the puzzling part. If it were an "I" there would be no doubt in my mind what we had. By the way, I will pass on the profit offer to the wife. But she is pretty attached already. By way of purest coincidence, her best friend, who lives in OK, bought a 1971 Overlander on the same day as we bought ours. Neither of us knew the other was in the market. Theirs is in a lot better shape, but the price was a little higher too.

If you have any pictures to post, those will probably help us identify it. 1965 was a transition year and sort of a one-off year so a quick visual might be enough to give us a positive ID.

Congrats on your trailer by the way, sounds like you got a HECK of a deal!

Does it have a door-within-a-door? If so, it's pre-1965.

Pics would help ~

It does not have the door-within-a-door. I think it very well may be a 1965 if that was a transition year. The taillights are the big plastic boxes with 4 lenses which resembles some later years. I will have the wife post pictures this weekend. Thanks for the help and well-wishes.

I dunno...you're getting up there in years, so you might not be reading it right. And you're going to trust the wife's eyesight as well??????

@ exthemius

Now that's funny! However, age only sharpens the wit and , and , hell, I forgot what I was going to say. I need a beer.

Do you have any red numbers on the front your trailer? Or a spot where numbers where at one time? If so there is a thread you can post them on and they can tell you quite a lot about your trailer.
