Question Newbie just bought first Airstream! Need some advice!

Hello everyone! We just purchased our first Airstream. It is a 1964 Overlander International and it seems to be in great condition! We are thrilled. We are picking it up in Lubbock, Texas next weekend and will be bringing it home to the Fort Worth area. Any suggestions where to stay in this area for our first overnight stay?

Welcome aboard - it's always great to see another '64 Overlander.
Make sure you have the tires/wheels/bearings checked before hauling it home.

Congrats on your first Airstream. Lubbock has four highly rated RV parks if that's what you're looking for on your first experience. While I'm not personally familiar with them, Woodall's gives them their highest rating. You might want to check online with Woodall's or GoodSam. Welcome to the world of Airstreaming and this Forum. Happy trails.

First nights stay?

Backyard if possible.

Plan B is just a short walk to AC and fully working plumbing.

Even recommended to stay overnight at dealership with new rig.

Enjoy

Gary

Welcome to the Forums!

The big question is what condition is it really in? Go to the Portal tab at the top of the screen, and then scroll down and look for the "Trailer Inspector's Checklist." Go through the checklist, and you will have a better idea of what works, where things are, is it safe to tow, is it safe to sleep in, etc..

Before your first overnight, you need to get it safely home. Again, depending on how long it has been since anyone camped in it, it may not even be safe to tow as is. Tires have a shelf life of around 5 years--don't trust the tread depth. Similarly, bearings dry out. Make sure you have the proper size ball to tow with. If the towing lights wiring has not been upgraded to modern standards, you will have no brakes, signals, etc. confirm with the seller what condition the lighting wiring is in, and if you have any doubts, get some of those temporary tow lights and a wire extension to help make it to the back of the trailer. There are several threads about "recovery" missions on these forums.

Good luck!

Well, let's keep this zombie walking!

You know, it is funny how you can have information staring you in the face, and you just don't pay attention to it. I clicked on the OP's user profile and saw that they had been members since 2006 and only had one post. Didn't occur to me that maybe the post that started the thread was from 2006 as well, but I did think "wow, they have been a silent lurker for an awful long time!"

So now the mystery is, did they never even make it home with their new Airstream? Were they so inspired at owning a vintage piece of Americana that they eschewed all modern conveniences and swore to live like it was 1964 from that day forward (thus no further posts)? Did they arrive to look at the trailer and found such a disintegrating wreck of a field find that they swore off trailering altogether? Inquiring minds want to know...

With only one post, picking up a unseen vintage trailer, one suspects it might not have been a great experience.
