Newbie in WI

Howdy. My wife and I just purchased a 1966 30' Sovereign. It's in very nice condition except that someone removed the bathroom fixtures to put in bunk beds. So my first project will be reinstalling a bathroom. It has never axles and alcoa wheels and is fully poilished so it's a really sweet looking trailer. I'll post pics soon.
Does anybody know where I could find the bathroom fixtures I need? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the forums and the world of AS from down the road in Wauwatosa. Your trailer is beautiful I hope to see it in person sometime.
An interesting feature of all Airstreams is that everything is designed to fit through the door. So even the entire bathroom set up in the classified section will fit through the door. However, you have a blank slate and can design your own bathroom. Do you have a black and gray water tank? This may be a good time to put one in. How's the floor? There are several threads in the forum to help you if you need to fix the floor in the back before replacing the bathroom. You might even try a search for bathrooms and see what others have done. This forum is a treasure of knowledge.

hi metalflake- you have one beautiful garage, and your coach looks like a gem too!! Wow, I'm in awe. I had an aunt who lived on algoma in oshkosh, and some cousins in neenah. As for your bathroom, I have a tub from my '72 you could have, but not sure how to get it to you. If I were you I would probably put in a shower pan instead, maybe skip the sink, free up some space for other stuff. Shouldn't be too tough in your 72-degree, laboratory-clean warehouse! Thanks for the kind words. The inside is in very nice condition except for the fact that the batroom has been removed. I only wish that was my garage. It will be stored inside my barn, so at least it will live inside. That is my Dad's shop (Interstate RV) in Lodi WI. I'm fortunate enough to have an RV store on my side to help with any problems I may run into. They took the Airstream in trade for a new RV. I got it really cheap!!! THANKS DAD!!
Here are a few pics of the interior of the trailer. The floors are nice. I'm kind of torn on what direction to go with the bathroom. I'm not sure if I should build a custom bathroom, or try to put an original back in it. Getting the new fixtures wouldn't be a big deal at all. Would it affect the value of the trailer much if I put in a new bathroom?

you can always try for original, collect the parts and use the trailer as is for now.

just try to get campground sites close to the showers!

i get by lodi on a regular basis, your dad's dealership sure looks nice from the highway...perhaps it is time for a visit!

Here's one more pic. It's dirty in these pics too. It really shines when it's clean. I can't wait until I can get it out on the road and get some pics of it in action.
Interstate RV is a really nice place. My old man runs a tight ship. The shop is always spotless. Stop by sometime if ya get a chance.

I also have a question regarding a tow vehicle. I plan on towing our trailer with my 1987 Chevrolet K10 longbox. It has a 350/350auto combo. The trailer will have a load distributing hitch also. Am I going to have any problems towing it with this truck? Do I need a 3/4 ton truck with a big block or diesel? Any input is greatly appreciated. THANKS!!

your k 10 will tow it o.k., you won't be roaring up any hills with it. (that is assuming it has 3.73 gears)

your weak link in your truck is the transmission, a turbo 400 is a tougher unit. you will NEED a cooler for it.

i used a number of different 1/2 tons to tow my 29 excella over the years, all did a good job. in 2000 i got my 2500 silverado. it is far and above any other truck i have used.

a big 300 horse truck would be nice, but not really needed. remember, airstreams were built to be towed by a family v-8 car!

I'm having a hard time believing that my '69 Int'l Ambassador was designed to be towed by a V-8 passenger car. Everyone tells me that I need AT LEAST a 3/4 ton truck with a 3:73 gear ratio. What's your advice for someone who knows nothing about trucks or cars (really) and needs to buy a good used towing machine?

here is proof you can tow a 29 foot airstream across country with a 1/2 ton truck without crashing into flames!

this is a campground my wife and i visited on our way back from florida, 92 suburban, 350/350 eng and trans with 3.73 gears.

we made this 2500 mile trip many times with no major problems other than a quikee lube kid that put 3 extra quarts of oil in the suburban in melburne florida. (that is a whole different story!!)

You have to remember what the V-8 cars were like in the late 60's and early 70's they were built like a truck, full frame, with the seperate bodys. Today's V-8 cars are a far cry from then. Also remember your Airstream is much lighter than the equivalent models of today. I can and have towed my 1975 31' with a 1/2 ton Ford, small V-8, with factory towing package. According to my handy dandy Airstream Weight Table your Ambassador should have a factory dry weight of about 5300# that puts it well with in the capacity of a properly equiped 1/2 ton pickup. And FWIW an Airstream tows much differently than an equivalent size and weight SOB (square old box)

So that is what it looks like all gussied up. I have the same trailer is yours two singles in the middle or double? Yours looks awesome. Then again I got mine for a computer and a laser printer and a scanner so I can't complain.
