Newbie - DC city dweller

Hi There, I'm a newbie here - and so glad to be included in this great site!

About me: my boyfriend and I are thinking of buying a 19-25' airstream to live in full time! We are very excited about simplifying and living more freely. However, at the moment, we are somewhat tied to Washington, DC - and we'd ideally like to be in the city. Any tips for setting up camp in a city? Is it possible? Are there regulations/permitting involved? So far, we've posted a craigslist ad seeking such a place. Thanks!!

Marjorie123,

Living in an Airstream in DC during the winter though romantic, would be a little tough. Take tonight, temps are going to be in the single digits and keeping the water lines from freezing would be hard to do. Even getting around that, you're going to have to find a place to park or have an outside/inside storage place that would allow you to live there. Your NW DC area (which is nice) you might get lucky and find someone that would allow you to park it in the back yard using their elec, water, sewer connection, same would hold true in NE or SE DC which even though the areas are getting better, could be a bad place to live in a trailer unless you have someway to secure it with bars on the windows (which is a look I have not seen on an Airstream)

Have you ever thought about a houseboat in DC? You might have better luck down on the water.

If nothing else, you could always live in a van down by the river! ;-)

Enjoy,

Rideair,

Thank you Paul for that awesome suggestion! I grew up sailing on the Chesapeake with my dad, but I hadn't realized there was such a vibrant live aboard community in DC! We've already had a response for living (in the airstream) on a property in Alexandria...but I have to say I am going to pursue both options! One thing we liked about airstreams (besides pure awesomeness) is how well they hold their value. I wonder if there is an equivalent icon for boats...

Marjorie123,

Yes, DC can be a fun place to live with everything from the waterfront, The Mall, etc... "Old Town" Alexandria can be fun as well depending on what you like to do. I've been running around DC for 30 years and have seen many changes good and bad. In fact, I'll be heading down to 12th SW, for a meeting in the morning.

Enjoy,
