New to trailering

And I hope I didn't have to already own an Airstream to join here, because I don't.

I have recently reitired and my wife and I have decided to travel, and trailering is the way we think we want to go. Of all the trailers on the marklet, Airstream certainly stands out as the Rolls Royce of them all.

I hope to learn more about them from your experiences before I make my investment.

Regards,
Aage

Thanks for the welcome, folks.

Re new, used or classic, let me see if I understand your definitions.

New is pretty clear, but the decision we made after seeing trailers up close for a while now is that we want a 25' unit, so that settled the "new" question: out of range of the budget.

Would classic mean like a '50s or '60s model that either needs refurb work (or has already had it)? If so, while I'm not averse to working on it, I'm not interested in undertaking a major overhaul.

So, with what little we know so far, we are pointed towards finding a used 25' with twin beds up front.

So far

Let someone else pay the depreciation and you could probably get a mid-90's model for a decent price. Keep your eye on Craigslist.

Vintage (classic?) is considered 25 years or older.

I found a 25' 2000 Safari in like-new condition for under $20K here on the forum classified. Deals can be had, don't get in a hurry.

Boy, do we know how you feel. My wife and I just went through the very same thing. (Our retirment date was April 1st - last month). We started looking last October - thought we knew what we wanted but ended up with a little longer! (Instead of 23' we ended purchasing a 25') LOOK, LOOK and keep LOOKING. We attended some AS rallies so we could see several of them up close and talk with their owners. We went to shows and travelled the state looking in showrooms. Tough to find many used Airstreams in the size we were interested. And, since we were really new at this, we decided to purchase new to get the two year warranty (having been boaters for three years in a 20 year old boat with the attendant costs). We've just finished our maiden voyage and have now been out three times this spring. We are having a great time and enjoying ourselves immensely! It is turning out to be exactly what we had hoped. It is our intention to learn about out AS this summer - then an extended trip at summer's end. Next year, we will start wandering the country. Perhaps, someday, our path's will cross and we can share stories about retiring and 'streaming. Ain't it a kick??

Yes, there is a trove of information on this site.

I was SURE I wanted a 25' model too. Until I saw the 23 that we bought! Ya' gotta' look at a lot of them. So ... best thing you could do would be to visit a rally and get a gander at the insides of several dozen in a size range that makes sense to you. I found it hard to translate the floorplan drawings and even ad photos of interiors into the "real thing" until I'd been in quite a few coaches.

Good luck with the shopping ... that's half the fun!

Thanks again for the warm welcome, I am making mental notes on your suggestions.

There are soooo many versions of AS trailers that it makes one's head spin!

We bought our 22' CCD used... it was two years old at the time. We paid just over half the cost of a new CCD. Not a bad deal at all. Good deals are to be had on slightly used Airstreams.... just be patient and willing to spend some time looking. Good luck and welcome to the Forum!
