New to site...long time Airstreamer

My wife & I purchased our 2004 Airstream Safari SS in Colorado Springs, Co., in Jan 05. It was used, but only for one trip. Price was too good to pass up...$29K...and still under warranty. Didn't know a thing about trailers and less about towing...just knew we wanted an Airstream for our planned retirement in '06. Scarred out of my mind, I bought it during a lunch break and had no place to store it. My wife found a yard near the home. It was snowing for my first attempt at towing. The yard had an inch of ice and our spot was on an incline. Needless to say, our first attempt at backing was a disaster and luckily we found some kind soul to help us out. Didn't know I could use such colorful language! Since then we logged about 20K on this beauty and I've gotten fairly proficient at backing and moving in tight spots...most recently through D.C. streets. Sure does get the adrenaline going! We're off with the trailer to Big Bend NP for Christmas. Can't tell you how much we've enjoyed our travels with the Safari...there's nothing like it. So...as I make repairs, etc., this forum seems like a great place to start my research.

Welcome to the forum, Mountainaxe. You've come to the right place for all things Airstream, and that's a very nice looking rig you have there.

Welcome to the forums. And as you search around you will be able to find info about anything that could possibly go wrong. And in emergencies, usually a quick post will get you quick answers..Take pics and let us know how Big Bend is over Christmas. We will be heading East to New Orleans.

Welcome to the forums.

My daughter just moved to DC. I had to take my Tundra there to bring her a mattress and I was really surprised at how narrow the side streets were. I would not want to take an Airstream into DC.

Our son lives in Fort Worth, so Big Bend NP is on my bucket list. Let us know how your trip there goes.

Dan

Welcome to the airforums Mountainaxe!

You have one of my favorite models for overall uses. Glad to hear you have overcome some of the early jitters of trailering. Looking forward to more of your posts.

Cheers.. Vinnie

It's been an interesting few months for us. Since my last post we've had some catastrophic damage & subsequent adventures. We spend the our last Christmas at Big Bend NP TX...on the way home we had a blowout that blew a large hole in our Sarfari...that ejected quite a bit of interior stuff...and destroyed the electrical, plumbing and heating systems. Long story short...our insurance company totaled the trailer. We were sick about it, but they paid us what we bought it for in 2005. So we traveled up to Buda, TX, and purchased a new 2012 Flying Cloud 27FB. On our first trip in May, we were caught up in a massive hail storm that trashed our new trailer and truck. Again...long story short...our insurance company totaled our brand new trailer! We received full value, so...back to Buda TX to purchase a replacement. This time we bought a Flying Cloud 23FB. Please wish us luck...we don't want to go through this kind of ordeal again! Just picked up the trailer this weekend and it's a peach.

Sounds like just too much to go through in such a short period of time.

Glad you're pressing forward. Here's to 3rd time being a charm. Safe, fun travels!
