Cool New Membership for Spouse

OK - I basically got tired of chasing replies & topic subscriptions over to my wife's email, for the account on here that I'd set up for her a while back, and set up one for my with my own email. The T20 is basically HER baby that I get to care for, maintain/fix & hitch & tow wherever she want to go whenever!

Here's the link to our 1st post for the restored vintage kin 1960 Avion T20 we got in July 2012 & have enjoyed at several vintage trailer rallies per year since....

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f417...ers-99135.html

We found out last year that our T20 was #2 off the line at S/N #1413 (Avion factory charts on the "Silver Beauties" CD show #1412 as 1st), but the POs had already restored it to non-original specs in the galley, tanks, etc. - so it's probably just something fun to talk about at Pismo & the other vintage rallies!

I'll probably continue posting the cutesy pix over there, & the more technical ones on my acct. - you know, the guy stuff, like how I crammed a Hensley Cub + Tekonsha RF controller on a very short A-frame with 2x 30# LP tanks!

BTW - we've previously toured/camped all over the USA & BC Canada with our 2 now grown kids in our 1988 VW Westfalia since new, & I'm finishing up a rolling resto/refurb on it now.

I think member "Westfalia" on here & another Westy tourer/camper, & he's "aircooled" on the Toureg site - may also be a fellow Porsche 914-aholic from the 914world & 914club sites as "aircooled" also??

Cheers!

The 20' T20 is a "mansion" for just my wife & I - compared to camping in our `88 Westy cross country for 2-4 weeks with us & 2 kids every summer!!

.... ahhhh .... empty nesting!

Our 88 Westy waterboxer ....

Here's an update with pix of our T20 with the Hensley Cub WD/Anti-sway Hitch (good for trailers up to 6000# & 600# HW), and the Tekonsha Prodigy RF wireless brake controller with the control box mounted on the A-frame as well (the hand-held wireless control unit plugs into the TV's 12v/cigarette-lighter outlet) which allows us to use multiple TVs we rent until we buy our own TV.

The box is mounted high up on a side mounted steel plate in order to give clearance for the Cub's side strut tightening handle ("U-handle" on the on rectangular "box" on the strut below the brake box in 2nd pic), & the alternative was to mount a crosswise plate in front of the LP tanks, since the wireless box must have "clear vision" not blocked by the trailer skin, LP tanks & other metal objects.

Fitment was a puzzle challenge with the 1960's era Avion's relatively short 30" A-frame + the Cub hitch's attachment fixtures & tension jacks + 2x 30# LP tanks.

... so I used cardboard cutouts to mock-up both the Hensley brackets & their adaptation/cutting to fit, & the Tekonsha box + mounting plate - before cutting any metal.

Here's what I came up with....

Since July 2012 when we bought our T20, we've used 4 types of TVs for 1-3 rentals a year: 2013 Ford F150 StdWB Extended Cab/6' Bed 4x4 3.6L V6 & 2014 F250 LWB Crew Cab/8' Bed 4x4, 2014 Dodge 2500 LWB Crew Cab/8' Bed 5.7L 4x4 & 6.3L Hemi 4x4, & 2013 Nissan Pathfinder Mid-size SUV 4.0L V6 in both 2WD & 4x4 (the prior body-on-frame version).

The full size trucks & SUVs are just too big for our skinny driveway & narrow streets & are way too tall for us to comfortably use - plus my wife will NOT drive them bare - let alone hitched, so the Pathfinder's mid-size SUV type is a better fit for our needs.

So we're currently looking for a low mile, lightly used & well maintained 2006-10 Porsche Cayenne S (normally aspirated V8 power) as an "extra car" & TV for both the T20, & for rented car haulers for my `73 914-2.0 during resto & after to car events.

More pix to follow later of the rear cargo rack mods to carry our bikes, trailer spare tire & rolling grey water tank (empty - when needed) - after I finish the mods. to it & wire up some lighting on it.

There does seem to be a lot of cross over interest of air cooled and airstream enthusiasts . My other fav forum is Pelican Parts for Porsche folks.

I'm currently in the process of installing receivers on my 911 for towing behind the motorhome.

Both groups offer fun communities.

Cheers Richard

Best check your owners manual & with your mechanic Richard, as I seem to recall an admonition about not flat towing nor front wheel dolly towing of the early aircooled Porsches.

Even if not, you'll still be adding "ghost mileage" to the beauty, which will negatively affect your value!!

Best to tow it on a lightweight & low-slung flat trailer.

PS - if you're a PCA Zone 8 member debating on whether to come to the Temecula Creek Inn for the annual awards, a little extra bait for that Sat. afternoon is that there will be a 918 Weissach Ed. on display at the Concours from noon - 4-ish (cars will be showing up from 10 am). As I understand it, only about 40-ish 918s have been delivered so far, so very rare.

The concours & display is open to non-PCA-members toi come drool too!

Cheers!
Tom

Tom, you caused me a fright. I jumped up from bed at 10;30 went out , pulled off the cover on my 911 to get the owners manual and check about any warnings against flat towing (should have Checked earlier) The only mention was that the supplied tow hook is for brief short distances only. But I'm installing more substantial receivers that should be more than up for the task.

Would like to use a trailer to tow, but the extra 1,500 lbs. seem abusive to the motorhome.

I do think the tranny will lubricate ok with the gears splashing while rotating.

Thanks for the invite to the concourse event. I'm heading down to Pheonix for a PCA auto cross event happening Sunday. My first time driving such an event, I'm stoked.

Cheers Richard

Just remember to not do what a friend of mine did when flat towing. He pullled up behind the motor home and shut the car off, leaving it in first gear. He hooked up and towed the car aith it still in first gear. The results were not pretty.

I volunteered at the Boys Republic Steve McQueen Auto Show charity fund raiser, & put our `88 Westy in display by the vintage RV & Trailer section (mostly to keep it off the dusty public parking lots), which gave me an opportunity to snap some quick pix....

Update: We're currently still looking for "the right" low mile 1-2 owner well cared for 2006-10 Cayenne S. We may go look & drive some more this weekend.

We really like the 6 month only Iceland Silver (silvery-light-blue metallic) paint on the `06 Cayenne S Titanium Edition used to fill in the No-2007-MY gap until the 2008 Series 2 was released early in Jan. 2007. Otherwise we have several acceptable colors for the 2008-10 Series 2 Cayenne S.

Cut-n-pasted this for the `06 Cayenne S TI in Iceland with our Avion to show my wife, to make sure she liked the color....

Did some Admin remove the pix I had here of the big ole F250 truck from the front in my driveway?

If so, why!?

Re-adding the pix of the F250 in our tight driveway, for why a full size truck/SUV won't work for us.

Looks similar to my useless RV parking slot, except my house eaves are neatly positioned to tear aluminum if I even thought of backing the AS in there. The 2012 Tacoma fits every bit as tight as your truck. Thank god for s nice neighbor that has wider space for the AS, and absolutely refuses any payment. Truly great folks.

Re-adding pix .....

Pix of the types of TVs which we've rented since getting our Avion T20 in July 2012:

1.) 2012 Ford F150 4x4 with V6 3.6L (?) Ecoboost & Tow Option - July 2012

2.) 2013 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4/2x4 V6 4.0L - 3x during 2013

3.) 2014 Dodge RAM 2500 V8 (2x in 2014) *

4.) 2014-15-16 Ford F250 V8 Gas & Diesel (2x D & rest gas) - during 2014-16 *

* Full Crew Cab or Extended Cab (all 4-doors), 6'/6.5' or 8' beds, engine types, trim levels, & colors varied with each rental.

Cheers!

Well not "MY" truck, but one of the many rentals.

The rented Pathfinders & the prospective Cayenne or maybe Lexus GX470/460 which we're looking to buy now will at least give us a shorter total rig length for better maneuvering it in, as well as actually being able to open the door a bit more in the driveway.

Your being in Corona, you probably know what the narrow streets are like here in/next to Old Towne Orange, since Corona likewise has some old town neighborhoods with similar constraints.

Glad you have a good neighbor!

I'm also working on a parking space for the Avion in our backyard area, where I'll use my Power Mover electric dolly to push/pull it back there & out again for hitching, to/from the driveway between the back of our house & the detached garage beyond it.

PS - You're welcome to bring the family/self down to the vintage trailer/RV rally at Newport Dunes for the 10-3 public open house on Sat. Oct. 1 - I have on good authority that there will be free hot dogs for all comers at our buddy's campsite. Come say Howdy if you make it!

Cheers!

AS is actually parked up in Victorville. We have a small 'getaway house' up there. The AS is being worked on to put in some upgrades.

The neighbor up there is a retired British Merchant Marine sailor. He has some great stories, and is super polite and ineffably 'British'.

Thanks for the invite.
