New Members from Clarksville TN
Hi,
We are considering the purchase of a 1989 Airstream 34' tri-axle. It appears to be in very good condition, with new trailer tires (10 ply), clear title.
We are going to take another look at it this week. If all the systems are in working order, AC/Plumbing/electrical, we plan on making an offer. The owner is asking $15000.
Is this trailer suitable for regular towing, or is it more of a park model? We want to use it several times a year, with trips to Florida, National Parks, etc.
We have a 2015 Ram Cummins Diesel, dually, 4x4, 4 door. I'm assuming our truck is more than capable of towing the 34' Airstream.
(We have owned 3 1970's Airstreams over the years, but none longer than 28")

Hi Rob and welcome to the site. 34's are not park models by any means and are very towable. I've heard of some issues finding spaces long enough to accommodate the length in some state parks, but have no personal experience as we own a 31'. The 31' has never been a source of trouble and I would not hesitate on a 34' if I was in the market.

I hope you find that the 34-footer is in good shape and can get it! (I'm partial to 34-footers and diesel pickups!). Your truck is more than capable. You'll find that the tri-axle trailers tow like a dream.

Welcome aboard. As others have already said your truck should be fine.
Have some friends with a 34 and it goes everywhere. It is not a "park model".
Hope all checks out and you land it. Post some photos for us if you do!

Welcome- We're neighbors as we are in Nashville. We just took delivery last week of a 2015 25' Eddie Bauer. We have a 2015 F250 for towing.
They person that delivered the trailer for us had a dodge dually with cummins and didn't even flinch at towing. You'll be a-ok.

We were wondering about the cost of replacing the refrigerator. The owner removed the 3 way fridge and installed a house 110 volt refrigerator. Also, is $15k a reasonable price, the trailer appears to be in very good condition with new 10 ply tires. Tomorrow we are going to look at it again and operate all the gas, electric and water systems. Any suggestions?

Good idea to understand the replacement cost for the fridge.
You will want a Dometic so it can run on propane as well. That is an invaluable feature that most Airstreamers would not forego. In terms of cost, would you do the work yourself or get a vendor to do it? Call an Airstream dealer nearest you and ask for a price for complete installation. Also consider buying one and installing it in yourself. You can get one delivered to door for $1346 from Amazon Prime.
If you are buying an older Airstream you may as well get into the program of doing as much as you can on your own. Otherwise the admission ticket could get quite expensive. Shop rates are very expensive and if there are modifications necessary to return it to the original arrangement, that may get outside what a dealer is competent or willing to do.

Congrats on the 34'! We have a '91 and tow with an '06 dodge 2500 diesel. We have been all over the USA and never had a problem finding a site.
Be prepared for little things to break, just today we pulled the camper from the back yard getting ready to do some local camping. On the second trip loading stuff, the door wouldn't open from the outside! The 'ole Keeler latch had finally had enough...
No big deal, Vintage Trailer sells the replacement part and I was able to MIG weld it back together so it works until I order a replacement.
We have a Hensley hitch and it's the best towing trailer I have ever drug behind a truck.

All Airstreams are at home on the road.... The 34s are very towable, and can go just about anywhere a dual axle 30 can go. One advantage is they stop better....
