My tow vehicle is a Toyota FJ Cruiser and I need a brake controller, wiring and some form of sway control according to the dealer.
Any suggestions from those experienced in selecting/installing good components?
Hello and welcome to the forums, congratulations on the new AS.
If you have the towing package on your FJ then you probably have the same setup for the brake controller as the 4Runner. Check just above the left side foot area, just next to your left foot. At the top of that kick plate, where the wiring starts, you should find a small plug tucked up on the wiring. This is the brake controller harness. I have the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Control for Toyota Vehicles. All I had to do was drill 2 small holes for the screws and mount it just by my right knee. The wiring harness just plugs into the back of the unit. It was very easy to install. There's a video at their site. At Amazon it doesn't list the FJ as one of the compatible vehicles so you might want to confirm at their site
For the WD anti-sway hitch I use the Equalizer. The PO of my AS had it so I inherited it. It's pretty simple to use once you've done it a couple of times. There's a thread in the forum dedicated to the Equalizer. See if there's a dealer in your area. I suggest you get the L-bracket pads, it's keep the thing from squeaking and clanking.
There are other hitches but I think the Equalizer will provide the support you need. The FJ and 4Runner share the same frame, used to anyway. Not sure about today's 4Runner. I tow a 23' AS with my 4Runner and the Equalizer works great, no problems towing.
Take your time, keep it at 60 until you feel comfortable, watch your overhead clearance, leave lots of braking room. Enjoy the ride
