Welcome to the airstream forums. Like you I like quality, thats why I bought my 1993 airstream classic limited. Previously I had a 1969 31' Sovereign.
It does matter what age ,there great, made to last.
It was told up to 75% of airstream made are still being used today!!!
I hope this was correct!!!!!

aluminun interior

michele,

To answer your question regarding late model Airstreams that have the aluminum interiors, the Safari SE (Special Edition) models have the same interior skin and windows that come standard on the CCD.

We originally were looking hard at the CCD because of the all aluninum look, and then, Airstream came out with the Safari SE and we ended up with a Safari 25FB (Front Bed) SE. For us it was the right combination The SE upgrade is also available on the other Safari models, I would call a dealer to confirm which models are available since they contrinue to add new models and options. AS is selling so many of the SE models that I wouldnt be surprised if "barely used" are already available in the resale market.

I was originally looking at both the 25' and the 28' models. Saw the Safari SE in the showroom too - was very very nice.

What steered me towards the CCD from the Safari was simply the interior design. While I did love the aluminum interior skin - the cupboards and cushions etc... weren't exactly what I was looking for. The salesperson had also showed me a used A/S (can't remember which model) from 1996. Nicely kept, one owner. But it looked very dated to me. Some people may not care about that, but it's one of the important things for me. I felt that the CCD may not look as dated down the road as one that is more luxurious and current if that makes sense. The CCDs already have that retro look - I feel it'll keep it's personality better over the years (but I realize I could be way off the mark with this one). Anyhow, they totally appeal to my aesthetic sense. Now if they could only market Barcelona chairs instead of a sofa...

As for 25' vs 28', until my last visit to the showroom it was a toss-up between the two lengths. The 28' really is great towards the bathroom/bedroom area. Very roomy, storage on either side of the bed, more user-friendly bathroom area. But we felt the 25' was better for us in the kitchen/living room section. I thought it had a better layout than the 28' and that it felt more roomy - at least it gave us the impression it was more roomy. I liked the in-wall microwave in the 25'. Just little things like that. Our truck will handle both models, it's just a question of which one felt better.

I've found some good pricing on new as well as barely used models in the U.S., so when the time finally comes we'll present the salesguy with current U.S. pricing and exchange rates and such and see what he can come up with.

One thing I did learn yesterday from the A/S rep was the reason behind why it's such a great thing the trailers are built from the outside in, that all the parts come in through the door. I've heard people mention that, but it never occurred to me why that's a selling feature. Duh! I can be thick sometimes. The lightbulb went off when I realized you can gut and re-model the interior without damaging stuff in the process.

You learn something new every day!

Cheers,
Michelle

Michelle, did you meet the AS rep at RV Canada today? I heard he was supposed to be there today. I'm waiting for some sales followup from them...

Should have went over to meet the guy/gal!

My wife and I sat in that unit in the show room for a good while the other day! Pretty nice. Just way tooo big for us.

Hi Dave,

I was fortunate enough to have met the A/S rep at RV Canada. His name was - and this is where I get caught up - Pate? It certainly sounded like Pate, though I'm most likely spelling it incorrectly.

He's from New Jersey, and had just flown in when we were there touring around the model in the showroom. He gave us the platinum tour so to speak - showed every nook and cranny, gave tips, told us the method of assembly in the factory - the whole nine yards. It was great chatting with him - and great timing on our parts!

I found it difficult to tear myself away from the CCD in the showroom. That's going to be my A/S - the size was perfect for the 4 of us, the colour scheme, everything. I just sat and stared (like a goof I guess, but what the heck).

I thought he was going to be there for a few days anyhow, imparting valuable Airstream knowledge.

Cheers!

Is the rep going to be there for a few days? Did he say? If so I'll take a run out to see him!

I'm surprised the dealer didn't let us know he was going to be their... tsk!! After all we did sign off on some serious dough.

So far I'm a bit disappointed in after sales.. although it is early.

I had asked for the AS order form... or something that documents EXACTLY what we order and the standard options.. not just '75 Anniversary Bambi'. Still don't have that. As well I have left calls for 2 days to get their hitch specialist to talk to me about tow vehicle setup... apparently he is 'real busy'.

I'll keep you posted on our experience.

Let me know if you know if the rep is still going to be around.

Cheers

Hi Dave,

When I was in (on Monday) all they said was that he'd be in "for a few days". What that means exactly, I'm unsure. I'd call and see if he's still in town.

We were in the process of checking out both the 25' in the showroom as well as the 28' on the lot. We were there for a good hour before someone from the desk came to tell us the rep was in. I found that to be a bit odd, but perhaps our salesman (Jim) didn't know the rep was in.

I'm going to take this purchase one step at a time. I'm going to thoroughly research this 'til the cows come home and present them with our findings, price-wise. They then have the choice to accept our sale or not. It really doesn't make much of a difference to me. I'll keep your experiences with them in the back of my mind, and also keep in mind that it's still early in your sale, as you stated.

IMO, I got the impression that most of the members on these boards know a heck of alot more about Airstreams than the salespeople do at the shop I went to. That being said, the last salesguy I dealt with freely admitted that, which was refreshing. I have no bones with someone who can admit they don't know something, providing they take the time and effort to get the answer.

Keep us posted on your dealings -

Cheers,
Michelle

We chose a 25' Safari

My wife and I with three girls ranging in age from 9 to 17 and a 45lb dog are in a 25' Safari Six Sleeper. I have to say from a towing and parking standpoint, it's a breeze. I've towed trailers for many years, all different types so my abilities are slightly above a novice but have been able to get into and out of some very cozy places with the 25'. We feel the layout is just right for us on our week to ten day outings. I don't think anybody has even muttered that we should've gotten a bigger trailer. I actually lived full-time in mine last year for 5 1/2 months with absolutely no problems.
Mine is not the SE flavor as I chose to install the two Fantastic Fans (3spd, 2-way) myself and negotiated the spare tire in at the time I purchased. I am a big fan of the CCD's interior but for what it's worth, I noticed just yesterday that the area around my kitchen (which is bare aluminum) was extremely hot to the touch while the areas to each side, which are fabric covered, was not at all hot or even warm. 'Course, this was on the wall facing the afternoon sun down here in Texas, without the awning out...go figure.

I did get a good feeling about the 25'. We're pretty much novices in the trailer towing department, but having taken a trip to Cape Cod a few years back with the in-laws' 34' 5th wheel, we're OK. Or at least hubby's OK - I'm the spotter/navigator/yapper.

On another note - when we were in Cape Cod, there were scores of very fancy-schmancy trailers and motorhomes around us. Automatic this, press a button to self-level that, every upgrade you could think of. But the one that stood out the most in my mind was this cool Airstream - don't know what kind. But the couple that travelled around in it were very low-key, laid back and friendly. Said their kids had bankrupted them with college tuitions so all they could afford to do was to tour around the country with their Baby. It made a lasting impression on me. That and the fact that we camped during the Sept. 11 attacks, which was mind-numbingly horrible on so many levels.

But the conversations with the Airstreamers planted a seed that took a few years to take root, but now I'm on a mission! A 25' CCD SS for me - and hopefully it'll have that terrific orange interior on the upper cabinets. If I get a great used deal I may not get that option, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks for giving me the scoop on your 25' experiences with your 3 girls and the dog B25guy - which leads me to ask - where does the dog sleep??

Cheers,
Michelle

Dog's quarters

Michelle,

When you leave the front folding table set up to its half-pulled out point and with the couch pulled out to a bed, the dog finds it quite comfortable under the table. She's about 8 years old so once 10pm rolls around, she heads for her "bed". We keep a bowl of water for her right under the fire extinguisher and so far nobody has tripped on it there. I should also mention that lately, our oldest has taken to sleeping in the back of the pickup where there is a twin mattress, screened windows and a fan...seems talking to her many boyfriends on the cellphone at 3am makes this preferable than the comfort of the A/S??
I'm sure you'll enjoy whatever you decide to get...we're still tickled walking into ours when parked in the driveway some 3 years since we bought it. Ours is not perfect but considering the alternatives, we're quite happy.
BTW, while down at Sea World last week in San Antonio, we stayed in a really nice resort, parked right between two big ol' Prevost busses with all the gizmos. Can't say that I felt any less capable or less comfortable though (and I never saw either of these neighbors for 4 days we were there). There were two other A/S in the park to add that special touch!
