New Member currently looking is now an owner

I joined the forum a couple weeks ago looking for advice on buying an AS. Thanks to all who responded and I want to report that we just purchased a 1999 23 ft Safari The unit appears to be in great condition and we are looking forward to picking it up once the hitch is installed. We have ordered a Hensley hitch which we hope is not overkill on a 23 ft. but better safe than sorry. We are making the switch from a 33 ft Class A motorhome pulling a Honda CRV to a 2006 Suburban pulling the AS. We will have a lot of adjustments to make but look forward to using and learning more about the AS. We are new to towing and I am sure we will have many questions so look forward to continued advice

Welcome. Check the rally calendar. There's lots of rallys in the SW you ought to look into.

23' is a nice length. My 18' Caravel is fine for me for a long time, but limiting for two people. The 27' Overlander is a little big for just running around, but great for a couple going for an extended time. I'd love to have a 24' something. Congrats.

Congratulations on your new babies (Airstream and Suburban). I think that you will find your new rig to be a good combination. The Hensley is a great unit, and you will be very pleased with it. Don't let initial hook up problems get you down; the result is worth the effort. Take the time to read all of the strings on the Hensley. There is a lot of good information there.

From one new member to another I say welcome. I just wanted to say I do not think that you can ever overkill a trailer hitch or saftey chains. This is always money well spent. I have been towing trailers as long as I have been driving. And nothing from the factory is ever adequate in my opinion. I have probably purchased at least ten trailers in my day and I have almost always cut off the factory chains and installed some really heavy duty ones.

Might also want to make sure you have a good set of mirrors. I think those things will make your transition to towing pretty easy. I hada 28ft Tioga Motorhome and when I got rid of it, I swore I would never have anything again that I couldent unhook.

I think you will be happy with your Hensley. We installed one on our 1993 25' Excella 3 years ago and we both feel it's one of the best improvements we ever made to our Airstream.

Welcome and congratulations on your new trailer. Being new to trailering ourselves, we treated ourselves to a one on one driving class given by RV Driving School in Lancaster, CA last week. It was a great experience and we learned a lot. We feel a lot more comfortable now and I am sure it pay off in the long run....We are very close to our towing limit with our TV and the tips we learned will certainly help us with that as well. Hopefully having a pull through will not be as essential as before the class. pj

Haul it and yourselves up to the 29Palms Rally. For you its not far and there will be lots of friendly folks with helpfull info for you.
