I am in the process of deciding on which Airstream to buy. I have had an 17' Casita trailer for 8 years and want some more room. I primarily boondock so am interested in a generator.
I was glad to find this resource. The amount of information and expertise is amazing!
Thanks,
Frank

Welcome! I live in Olathe and have a 19 ft Bambi and love it! I use a Yamaha EF2400is and think it's a great unit. It can run the 1100 btu ac and us very quiet. The hondas are also a great unit. Have fun with your search.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your search. In the trailer category, Airstreams with built in generators are rather rare.

Hi Frank, since you're in Columbia, I can recommend Bill Thomas in Wentzville.

We boondock a lot too and use the Honda 2000i which works great for us.

I can also recommend Bill Thomas. I bought used (not from Glenn Thomas), but he treats me like a preferred customer. Maybe he's looking forward to my next purchase, and wanting to sell me (which he has, I will buy from him next time). I buy parts and accessories from him and he has spent a lot of time with me on the phone, investigating my questions.

Frank,
How big a generator you need depends on a couple of things. If you have a solar panel, you will need less generator. We get by on a 1,000 w. Honda and one panel. However, if you want to use electrical appliances like toasters, microwaves and A/C, you will probably need a bigger generator. The first 2 may run on a 1,000 w. at low altitude, but I've only tried them at high altitude and that didn't work, but it was 10,000'. A/C probably means 3,000 w.
For us, a generator is more necessary when we park under trees, it's cloudy or during the short days of fall. We usually don't need it at all in the spring and into August. In Yosemite in late October, camped under redwoods in a narrow canyon with little direct sun and cloudy days, we needed to top off the batteries an hour or two. If we hadn't had to run the furnace, we might not have needed the generator at all.

Welcome to the forums, Frank...you'll find a lot of useful info here and folks who are willing to share their knowledge... We have a 19' Safari SE with factory solar and use a Honday 2000i generator as well...it will run everything except the AC...so far we do not have not 2nd 2000i generator to run in parallel for the 13,500 btu AC but there is probably one in our future... between solar and generator(s) our camping mode has expanded nicely into longer periods of dry camping an going without hookups. Glad you are ready to join in the fun!
Happy trails!

I am now a full fledged Airstreamer. I purchased a 16' International from Colonial in New Jersey last week. (Dave, Pat and his wife couldn't have been nicer. Really good to deal with.) I came back through Va., N.C., Tn., etc. to Missouri. My fj Cruiser pulled it fine, but I think I may use a truck for TV in the future.
