New caravel owner in Georgetown, Texas

Hi All,

Just wanted to introduce myself as I am always on airforums looking for little tidbits of wisdom.

I purchased a 1967 Caravel that is a total project. But I could not pass up the $1000 asking price. Craigslist rocks. It is out on a lake east of Waco, Texas. I went a few weekends ago, paid the owner and pulled off the dry rot tires and also have to deal with "stuck" brakes on one hub. I am going this weekend with the new tires to bring the baby home.

It will be a nice project. It is completely gutted already, I need to see if the axle needs replacing - will take to a trailer shop and get their opinion. Good thing i live a few miles to an IKEA, so i can retro mod it out.

Here are a few pics. Yes, unforunatley it has a scrape down one side but I am going to consider that "character".

It is virtually a given that the axle needs to be replaced. It seems unlikely that if the brakes are frozen that someone has replaced the axle in the last 20 years, but anything is possible. Take that from someone who convinced himself for a year that the axles are "OK" but just couldn't refute the angle of those bloody links when staring at them in the process of putting on stabilizers...

The nice thing is that if you buy the right axle, they come with new brakes and drums and bearings so they get lots of things done that need doing anyway.

Cool! Looks like it has potential! I am also a new Caravel owner. Mine is a '65. Working on the problems of it now. I will need a new axle too, and many other parts. It looks like you have a fun project, and that is a great price to start with.

Where are my manners?

I should have started out with "Welcome to the asylum...er... forum" and then started in with my fatalistic predictions. I'm planning on getting new axles in July, by the way. It's worth it, and probably doubly worth it on a single-axle trailer, and you only have to pay half as much!
