New airstream owner

Hi: I just bought a 1972 31 foot airstream and Iím so excited about the restoration. Iím glad to have found this forum and look forward to collaborating and any help I can get. I donít know what works and what doesnít work and Iíve downloaded the original owners manual and have been looking at it. Iím enthusiastic and hoping to have it done within the year. I have some assistance locally but mostly will be doing the work on my own :-) Exciting time, pics soon!

Restoring your AS should prove to be a lot of fun with some hard work and frustration mixed in. But when it's done you will be a "happy camper"!

Share pics along the way.

Enjoy the journey!

Welcome to the Airstream life. There are a bunch of threads on the early 70s AS renovations. Assess what needs to be repaired and updated. Making it safe is paramount. Donít throw anything away until youíre complete and happy with the renovation. Good luck and see you down the road. Bubba

Hello from Colorado: I think you will like the vintage Airstream hobby. I find it interesting to learn how they were built, and how I can make necessary repairs and upgrades. I'm on my forth Airstream project, although none of them involved a "body off frame" renovation.

My current 75 Overlander 27' is a similar trailer to your 31 footer. I consider them the "long" trailer models Airstream offered at the time. Our trailers are built very much alike. Mine is a rear bath, twin bed floor layout. It had rear subfloor rot and rear end separation and a healthy case of rear end sag. I've repaired that, installed new holding tanks, and have replumbed the trailer. I'm now re-assembling the bath and gally so I can test the plumbing and drain systems. I have new axles and shocks in the garage ready to install.

I might suggest you start a "project thread" in the Knowledge Base, Airstream Trailers, Sovereign, and then 1972. That category is where other folks post "blogs" describing the trials and tribulations of their projects. Reading over some of these threads would be helpful to you. I like Minno's "Little Girl" thread about their Sovereign project. They did a great job. There are many other equally as good threads to look over.
