new airstream grandpa

Hi Ya'll,
My son recently became the happy owner of a 1971 Trade Wind, but it will live with me until we get some repairs made, so I guess I qualify as Grandpa to this little gem.

He's been looking at them for a while, and called me from several states away to say he found one about 30 miles from me; could I go look at it. Of course, it was a holiday weekend and the roads were packed and banks were closed. So after some ATM raids, we got enough cash to cover the deal. Got there before the other two interested parties, swapped balls from owner's hitch to mine (I didn't have one that big), hooked it up and towed it home through curvy mountain back roads. No lights on the camper as I didn't have a plug or adapter for the old wiring connector. Long, slow ride, but it towed much easier than my 35 foot Forest River camper.

I put new tires on it, rewired the connector to a modern wiring connector, and my son dragged it 4 hours home. Most everything is original and still works. Copper water lines are broken, apparently from freezing. Couple window issues. But he's taken it camping twice anyway.

Yesterday, it came back to me for some restoration and repair work. I am retired and have the time, while he is still working and has a house in the midst of remodeling. I am anxious to play with it, and will be posting the progress in the Trade Winds forum.
