my first travel trailer and its a airstream!

Hi there!

My 85 year young dad ,3 dogs and I are planning a western trip this June and would like to know if there is caravan of other airstreams going west from Florida. Any suggestions on camp sites, roads, etc?

Thanks!

WOW! What a trip. I took my mom and her husband out to Yellowstone for her 70th birthday a few years back and it looks like we will be doing something similar this summer. What you are doing is a great idea. I'm sure there will be tons of advice coming in several areas including getting ready to tow and then where to go. First, I would make sure your rig is optimized in terms of TV-trailer (well matched, brakes right, weight distribution dialed in ect). Second, do some shorter weekend trips with travel days comparable to what you might expect for your summer days. Third, check into towing insurance and so forth.

I cant really give you suggestions on routes and so forth since a "western trip" covers a whole bunch of possibilities. The west is big, and you are limited only by time and interest. Letting us know what you have in mind will help us help you.

Finally, keep in mind that much of the west is high altitude. It might be wise to gain altitude over several days and be watchful for the effects of the thinner air. Check in with your dads doctor for tips too.

You didn't mention whether you are a member of the WBCCI (Wally Byam Caravan Club International), but if you are, there are likely to be a number of local Unit Caravans departing Florida in early June for the International Rally in Bozeman, Montana (June 27 through July 4). I often travel with WBCCI Caravans and they are wonderful experiences -- you can count on there being a number of experienced Airstreamers among the Caravanners who can assist with most any question or problem. In fact, I have signed-up with my Unit for their Caravan to the International. The caravan leader designs the route and handles most if not all of the reservations -- the kitty fees for the Caravans that I have taken have always been quite reasonable. Our Unit Caravan will be traveling along the Northern Route to Bozeman with one of the highlights being four nights in Yellowstone National Park.

If all goes as planned, my rig will be relatively easy to identify -- a baby blue 1975 Cadillac Eldorado convertible towing a 1978 Argosy Minuet 6.0 Metre.

Good luck with your quest for a Western Caravan -- and enjoy your summer of travel experiences!

Kevin
