I remember reading about you and your family when I used to read and re-read my grandparents' old National Geographic magazines as a kid. I was delighted to see the article in Airstream Life about the caravan that your father photographed and your mother wrote the article for. I would love to meet you some time. You and your dog are welcome to stop in and stay if you are ever passing through Louisiana on the interstate.

Wow, this is great! First we get Dale (Pee Wee) Schwamborn participating here (who was on the 1959 Cape Town to Cairo Caravan), and now someone that participated in the 1956 European Caravan. This brings the history of those great caravan's back to life! I wonder if there are any participants from the 1963-64 Around the World Caravan that might join the AirForums in the near future?
And by the way, I loved the Airstream Life article, too - it sure sounded like your dad had a dream job, and it must have lead you to many great childhood memories. Welcome to the AirForums!
I am glad you are sharing your travels and memories on the forum. I started last year to share mine.
We will keep in touch via e-mail, but this is a nice way to let the "newbies", knowby about the past.
There aren't enough of the "originals" left.
Someone mentioned about the "Around-the-World Caravan". I know that Christine Charles, now married, and Nick Charles are living. Nick and I were the scouts in Africa.
The more tales shared, the better the historians can learn about actual events.
You bet Dale and Randy - share what you've got. We love to hear the old stories. Too bad we couldn't all get around a big campfire - that would complete the mood.
We enjoy hearing from you guys and are glad you are here.

Barry,
I did a "campfire" last summer at Breckenridge, and I will "campfire" with the Four Corners in two week at Cottonwood. Tentatively I will visit the International in Bozeman. I try to put as much information, as I can, on the Sierra Neveda Unit's website. So many stories, so many miles, and so many smiles.

Thanks Pee Wee, I love the Sierra Nevada Unit's website. So much history, so much fun was had by Wally Byam Caravaners. My hope / dream is to be like them and travel the world in my Airstream.

This is wonderful news!
As we are still working we will only travel with the club via New England Unit Caravans for the next 10 or so years. These are great because they are 2 to 2 1/2 weeks long which is doable for worker bees like us. There is a couple is our club that had retired about 3 years ago and now they spend much of their time caravanning with the WBCCI. They are having the time of their lives and we wish we were traveling with them.

Randy,
Welcome to the forums. I too have Airstreamed my whole life, and have read both of the articles about your family. I hope we can hear more stories from you, are you planning on attending the WBCCI rally in Bozeman, MT this summer?

Hi Laura, Greg, Joe, Barry, and Dale. Still learning the skills of using the forum and thanks for your patience and the kind words and wishes. Like Dale the early adventures of Airstream travel come alive whenever you back up the hitch and "Hook On". When you think how many of us participate in this great experience that is only limited by our imagination. When i step through the door, "Portal" of my trailer I find myself already planning the next adventure. I honor all of you that "get off the porch" and "plan" your next adventure. Wally was right when he said, " It is better to wear out than rust out". I am looking forward to Sarasota. I just traded in my 19' Safari for a 25' FB. What a difference! I have a few warranty issues but overall the quality seems to have improved in '08. The FB layout is wonderful and i recommend it to anyone. Again thanks for the support and look forward to meeting you, but "not on the porch" Randy

I may drive slow Laura but I make it safe and sound... Welcome Randy to the Forums.. Looking forward to more of your adventures. Ralph (Airboss)
