I'm looking at a Sovereign, VIN # J1266564. The plate says "LAND YACHT" above the number. It is supposed to be 1964, with title. $8500, it needs work- plus oven not working, owner removed support for table near couch, no awnings. Questions: 1) Price 2) I can tow up to 5000 with my current vehicle 3) help.

Hi there Kelly...welcome to AirForums!
The VIN # indicates that what you are looking at is a:
J = Ohio built
I (1) = International Trim Level
26 = 26' Overlander
6 =
1966 (not a 1964)
5 = double bed layout
64 = sequential build number
Pictures of the same year & model can be found here:
Airstream Archives - 1966 Overlander as well as the VIN # coding.
This page,
Price vs Condition will help you ascertain whether the asking price is in-line with the condition - without pictures and based on your basic description, it seems high.
No, it should not be towed with a vehicle with a tow rating of only 5000 lbs. A 26' Overlander has a "dry weight" of 3850 lbs and that means without any options, water, gas tanks or
anything in it. Once loaded for a trip you would most likely be tipping the scales close to 4500-5000 lbs. Generally speaking, a tow vehicle rated for 5000 lbs is most likely a bit exaggerated - it's "rating" is taken at sea level, when new and perfectly tuned. Also a TV rated at 5000 lbs probably has too short of a wheelbase to safely tow that big of a trailer....sorry! You could probably
move the trailer - but it will kill your vehicle by towing over any distance or with less than perfect conditions....and make for a miserable, not to mention un-safe experience.
