Smile Less Ordinary Life

Hello Airstream Community! My husband and I just listed our home and it went under contract in less than two weeks. Wow, we didn’t expect it to happen so fast. We are purchasing an Airstream and tow vehicle within the next few weeks to begin living life on the road. More like my husband travels a lot for work and I’m joining him. He is forgoing hotels for a RV lifestyle. We are living a less ordinary life one mile at a time.

We are currently looking at 27’ and 30’ flying cloud and classic. He wants the flying cloud and I the Classic. Tow vehicle is going to be a Ford F-150 or F-250 or Chevrolet Silverado 1500 or 2500. Lots of choices and decisions to be made. I’m excited to see what the final selection will be and ready to begin our life of adventure and exploration.

Welcome and congratulations on your sale!

I would recommend sitting in the trailers more and go over in detail what each of you prefer.

The tow vehicle will be personal choice of comfort mostly. You will have more payload options with the F250. It may be more important as this will be your "home" and thus have more "stuff" to potentially haul around.

Good luck!

Welcome! We just sold our house and started full-timing last week! You may have already noted this, but just in case: the Classic is significantly heavier everywhere (gross weight and tongue weight) than the FC and the International models. Keep this in mind when pairing your tow vehicle with a trailer, and make the choices that suit you best.

Congrats! Highly suggest getting a tow vehicle with an integrated exhaust brake. This means diesel, either the Ford F-250 or Chevy 2500 approx 5 years old or newer. Just drove down The Grapevine today (5 miles at 6% grade) and didn't have to touch the brakes in our diesel F250

Also suggest 4x4 for the truck, even though you didn't ask about that option. Needed it last week to back into an uphill gravel campsite.

Welcome from Colorado: And welcome to the Airstream community. You can learn a lot about your new Airstream here, as well as the up and downs of full time living. You certainly will have a less ordinary life. Many people do it.

I'm with you, I'd choose the Classic. Yep, it is heavier, but your new diesel tow vehicle won't mind a bit. You deserve the luxury of the Classic. A diesel is inherently more efficient than a gas engine. The diesel has more torque making merges onto highways and mountain passes easier. I'd choose the diesel tow vehicle. Both of my choices are budget busters. I like spending other people's money.

We have a 86 Limited. Just today I "oiled" the hickory cabinets, which I do at least once a year. They still look great and are hanging together quite well. I think that is an advantage in the top of the line Airstream.
