Hi everyone! We have just bought our first AS - she is a 1970 Safari called Minsky. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has posted on these forums you have already been a great help - purchase checklists, manuals - there is a HUGE amount of information here and some amazing renos which have delighted me and terrified the husband....the 'honey do ' list is getting longer by the day.
We collected her from Cranbrook BC from a great couple (she was at their wedding) but she had not been moved since August. The original plan was to go down and assess, come home, think about it and then go down in the spring to collect her if we made the decision to buy (there are 3 mountain passes to go over so we wanted to be sure of the weather)....however a) it was a huge drive and spouse was not keen on repeating the process b) the weather was rainy but the roads were clear of snow and c) we really really liked her! So we did the inspection as best we could, looked at tires/axles/jumped on the bumper. She seemed remarkably 'clean' and there was so much original equipment/applicances which were immaculate - my stove at home is not as pristine as hers! There were the original trays, shower curtain (!) although unfortunately PO had drilled holes in the bathroom walls to install speakers. We knew the hot water heater is not working but there was no significant soft spots in the floor (that we could see/feel) apart from a damp patch by the water tank which could be from the pump or a possible leak. Unfortunately the curved windows above the hitch have been replaced with plexi but there is an original screen door and everything inside seems to be 'as new'. She towed really well with F150 HD and there was virtually no change in the fuel consumption (may by +$20) for the 8 hr drive back to the okanagan (BC). Today we are moving her to her pad outside the house ready for a good clean before we start on the reno .....get ready for all the questions!!! And we look forward to making new friends!
