Introducing Myself

Good Afternoon
Just registered today and look forward to interfacing with the Airstream community. Hopefully down the road, I will provide some positive feedback.

Our goal today is to purchase an older Airstream and completely renovate from the frame out. Currently later this week, we will be looking at a 1979 27' Argosy and have read the end cap is steel.

Is the remaining shell and frame the same quality as the same year Airstream?

Thank you

No advice, but welcome. I've been a member here for over a year, and have learned so much just by lurking. Our dream is in motion, picking up our first AS in a few days.

Welcome to the Forums!

Yes, the endcap is steel, and the Argosy line was sort of a "test bed" for future features fo the Airstream line, so the build of the rest of the trailer may be pretty similar to what was being built at the time, or there may be test-bed stuff going on that makes it different.

Much more important than how it was built, is how it has been maintained. The trailer is, after all, 50+ years old, and if it has been parked in high wet grass for the last 20 years, the frame is probably rusting away and will require extensive repairs. It is not easy to inspect a frame, as it is enclosed by the belly pan, so you need to learn about identifying rear-end separation, and all the other means of deducing that the frame has troubles.

good luck!

Hello Mel C . Greetings from central Kentucky and welcome to the forum. Be sure to post pictures of your Argosy. We like pictures, especially of someone else doing the work.

Yes, I agree with that many years regardless how it looks, I plan on removing the shell, sandblasting the frame, weld supports where needed and with new Dexter torsion axles renovate an old Airstream with a number of todays conveniences.
Thank you for your input
