Ahhh, yes Jim, I was waiting for someone to crack the first Aggie joke! I remember my initiation into Texas college pickin'. I was a mere 10 when I moved to TX and I was unafiliated with any universities at that time.
Of course, when you go to school in TX, it is a must to wear your favored university T-shirt to school. I, being the unbred Texan that I am, had no clue which school I should pick. So, being the follower that I was at the age of 10, went with the most popular school pick of the time and became an official Aggie. As I became older, I still called myself an Aggie even though I didn't follow their sports nor did I attend their university. Of course, marrying a Texan narrowed my choices down a bit eventually, but once I became a football fan I naturally grew into a Longhorn.
OMG, in regards to football being life in TX- sports in general are so much better there, no wonder we have so many good athletes in TX. My husband is a coach and teacher, and it is amazing the difference between Texas athletics and those elsewhere. It is virtually non-existent here in NC. We went to watch a high school football game (standing by the side of a non-lit field in broad daylight with barely enough bleachers to seat the parents of the team, no less) and it looked like a second string middle school team out there playing. There is just no devotion to sports in the school systems here- everything is extra curricular or they pick it up in their club sports outside of school. Back home, we had a whole class period in school that was an athletics class and then had practice after school too!
