Howdy from San Antonio

Hi everybody, I know very little about the Airstream trailer. I allways thought they were like a world apart from the norm since I was a kid, and Im 52 now.

I came here to learn what I can about an old Airstream I came accross today, it was a 1954 with twin axels and looked to be 30 ft. long. It had a "05033" on the plate by the front door, I have no idea what it means. I do know it is a class 71, dont know what that means either. It weighs 4.400 lbs and is totally fixable with out too much trouble but for polishing it appears.

I love restoring things, and just a quick rub on it with some Mothers Wheel polish, and a soft rag had me seeing my self, in the circle I made. I hope I can learn what it is all about from the knowlege here.

Welcome Warlock...

Welcome to the Forums. Assuming you now own your unit, good luck with it...

As a new member, you must now learn the secrets of "Searching"

Use the tab above in blue bar, type in words you're interested in (more than one OK) and wait for series of messages (threads..) to appear for your reading enjoyment...

If you post the full serial number here, someone will be kind enough to decode it as to year, exact model, location of manufacture and configuration...

It is rare indeed for a vintage trailer of that age to need only polishing.. If you are so fortunate, you are a lucky person.. Read here about frames, floor rot, plumbing and electrical issues, leaks and window problems and more.. Be not discouraged! Even those faced with big problems are generally willing to endure for he fun of traveling in their silver cocoon and meeting fellow travelers..

And if you just want polishing advice, type in polish and tips and recommendations and look at the fun things you'll find...

Welcome Warlock. Ditto what everyone else says about the Search features plus I need to add that we all would love to see pictures.

Welcome to the Forums and welcome to Airstreaming. There's nothing else like it.

I really have nothing to add to the above, I just wanted to welcome you to the forums!
Hopefully one day I can go to San Antonio. My wife is from Texas and S.A. is a place we have always talked about going but never have.
Anyway, nice to have you here on the forums.
Dave

Hello Warlock -- Welcome to the Forums! I grew up as an Air Force dependant and count SA as my home town. My mom grew up there. I was born in the old Nix hospital down on the river and graduated from Jefferson wa-a-ay back.

Trailer length is measured bumper to ball, so it sounds like you have your model identified correctly in your User Name/Avatar area. See: Vintage Airstream Photo Archives and click on the '54 Liner/SOTR. You will see the serial number samples for these models at the top left of the page. The first digit of your serial number stands for Ohio. The SOTRs that year were given the sequential production numbers from 5002 to 5042, so there were probably 41 built.

Three guys produce the Vintage Airstream Podcast and one of them, Rob Stanton, has a SOTR. It's always fun listening to their adventures. You can listen over the computer speakers if you don't have an iPod or mp3 player. Rob has a website dedicated to his SOTR restoration - Sweet Sovereign of the Road.

The only cost for this info is one of many requests you will get for posting photos here! Welcome again.

Talking Wow Thank you !

A big thanks for the great welcome. I may have giving the impression that the old trailer was just in need of polish. Thats of course not the case but the floor is solid, and the interior wood is very good but in need of serious cleaning and polishing too.

I did notice that the front left orange marker light had been replaced with an ugly new square thing that I could'nt believe any one would attach to an Airstream

I will use the search feature suggested, and once again thanks every one

Welcome from just 180 miles north of you up Hwy. 281. Give Doug or Sheryl Wylie a phone call. They are avid Airstreamers there in San Antonio who could not be friendlier. They are always going somewhere in their Airstream, usually with other Airstreamers. I was with them a week or so ago near Houston at a Vintage Airstream Rally. Their phone numbers are: 210-967-8903 and 210-859-3450. Tell them a big old Cowboy from Hamilton sent you.

Doug will be able to put you in touch with others in your area who have vintage trailers and have experience in restoration of their trailers.

Thanks very much. I will give them a call and do as you said about letting them know who sent me. Very nice of you, and very appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum! While I have nothing of substance to contribute (other than I love San Antonio, went through it in November), pictures always help - a picture tells a thousand words.

Man if you love restoring things you will love an old Airstream. You won't EVER run out of something to do. And I can see from your polishing that you are going to have it bad!

I'm just up the road at Canyon Lake COE park right now.
