Hi All!!! Just a newbie with a 1946!
Hi Everyone!
A bit new to the forum thing, but here goes...
Found my 1946 model 2 Curtis Wright on my local Craigslist. Didn't really know what it was but thought it would be nice to fix up and use for a place to relax during bicycle races and short get aways. It was really in horrible shape which makes anything I do to it that much better!
But we're really being careful to correctly restore this camper with historical preservation in mind. Plenty of pictures and lots of research and dreaming about how it could be! All your successes (and yes, your failures too!)help to let me know it IS possible! Thank you for your postings and hope to meet you! Happy Holidays!!!

Congrats.....Like that California myself......Back in the ole hippie days, spent some time there with my cousin in 1969....around a little town called Linden....next to Stockton...Still have some friends there I met back then......You are going to love the trailer.........Nothing like it !!!!!

New Frame or use the old?
So the story goes like this. We're down to the frame, and have it into the fabricator (since the week before Thanksgiving). Can't seem to get the old jack to move with a weeks worth of penetrating oil and a torch and two muscley marines trying to turn it! I guess 65 years of weather was too much. Then there's the many cracks the frame keeps starting to exhibit. The axil also is in need of some major restoration. Brake parts are non existant. Hmmmm Do we manufacture a new frame or keep fixing the old (and add a new axil)?

So I guess it's a rebuild
Got some new wheels and we've decided our little frame is going to be rebuilt with a new axil and new brakes. It will also be reinforced so it can withstand today's highway speeds. Now, on to the body work...

If you have a good welder a new frame when you're that far apart is a great idea. Can't wait to see pictures of the rest of it!

Found a little Princess!
Found a little Princess oven/stove combo from a 1952 Aljo to put in our little camper. Got it all sandblasted, painted, new insulation, and searched many stores to find the right replacement screws. (mental note...as fun as sandblasting is, have someone else do it next time!!). She's all put back together and ready to go!

Holy moley, beautiful paint job on that oven! That's awfully exciting, I might have to give our 1954 Preway a closer look before tossing it up for grabs.

Starting to rebuild
Today we brought the camper walls to the airport hanger where Ryan will be working on replacing some of the sheets of aluminum and riveting the walls back together!

Frame is done!
So what do you think? Marv’s trailers did a pretty great job on the little frame. New axil, (notice no leaf spring anymore), new brakes, a little more bracing to withstand higher speeds, and that stupid jack is replaced with one that will work! Thanks Tim for a beautiful job. And thanks again for repairing the bent jack after I learned that the wheel on the jack is supposed to be removed after raising all the way. Now, on to the powdercoating experts….

Check out my blog I uploaded a bunch of pics of some pretty interesting trailers. I went to a trailer show in Palm Springs as a part of Modernism Week. There is a pretty cool trailer from Germany that looks similar to your trailer.

So the frame is back from the powdercoater. But notice the jack is not painted. He said that he couldn't paint it because it would melt the grease inside it. So is there anything special I should know about just putting some primer and paint on it? Has anyone else done this before?

Jody...were you guys at the Trail Along to Pismo Rally last month? If so, you made some pretty quick progress and your trailer looked great!!!

LOL!!! Thanks Shari. That one was the one fixed up by FlyteCamp in Bend Oregon. That one sure is a beauty!!! Wish ours was done but it's still getting some rivets put into it. Hope to have it ready by Christmas but like everyone always says....it costs twice as much and takes three times as long...(or is it the other way around?!)

Oh...I thought that would have been a very quick transformation! 
Looks like yours will be every bit as much a "looker" when you are done though...I know all about costing twice as much (or more!) and taking wa-a- a-a-y more time than expected from working on our Safari Birdy!
