Post Hello I'm in need of a door knob for my vintage 1965 Airstream Safari

Hello my name Joshua. I own a 1965 Airstream Safari 22". Its a real beauty in good shape but in need of several parts.

I am trying to find the main door knob, but I can't seem to find it anywhere online. Does anyone know how I can get a replacement part? I dont mind if its used so long as it works. Mine was broken off recently.

Hi Joshua,

A photo might help. Do you mean the lock for the entrance door?

There are a few places that may be able to help, Out-of-Doors Mart, Vintage Trailer Supply, and Inland RV come to mind. Inland's site only lists their sale items, they have more if you give them a call. One thing to be aware of is that the Airstream version of the Bargman L100 has a longer bolt than the standard version, hence the higher price. If you use a standard legnth bolt version, it will not protrude beyond the door frame leaving you looking into the hole at the bolt feeling silly. You're probably wondering how I know this.

Welcome to the forums, too. I've made a couple of work related to UT Pan Am. Edinburg is a nice place. I like it down in the Valley.

Schlage A series, 3-3/4" backset works. Take a look at this thread.

I guess I never did get pictures up, but the lockset works just fine with no mods required. I did also get the new deadbolt to work, using the original bolt and mechanism, with some grinding and filing on the tailpiece of the new deadbolt. Deadbolt works perfectly.

By the way, I am assuming you have the Weiser lockset that, I believe, Airstream only used on their 65 models. My Tradewind and Caravel (both 65s) both used the Weiser. Still have the original on the Caravel.

One more thing, you will probably have to special order the 3-3/4" backset.

Thank you! And yes I am from the Valley. I'm in college at UTPA right now. This airstream in my bachelor pad 20 mins north of campus. I am trying to sell it once I fix the door knob. I uploaded some pictures onto my profile.

I appreciate the thanks!

After looking at the photo of the lockset in your profile, it is definitely different from the Bargman L100 that my 67 Trade Wind uses. I think that retronotold probably has the best advice.

The long bolt part looks like it is in pretty good shape. I'll bet you can use it with a replacement lockset that comes with a shorter one. Perhaps you can find a Schlage lockset locally that will engage the longer setback bolt. I'd take it with me to the hardward store to compare.

Best of luck.
