Hello from GA

Hi everyone,

I've been a lurker for a few months while figuring out what an Airstream resto entails as compared to the Shasta (10') we recently finished and then sold.

While I haven't posted before I did attend the TAC Stone Mountain rally last year and this year and had lots of fun meeting a great group of people. During the trailer tour I discovered the trailer I now covet...a 1966 Overlander International. It was thought that the layout would be the same over the course of a few years but it turns out that isn't the case so for now I fear my search is very fine tuned!

In the meantime, I'll just have to make do with our Covered Wagon (16') and live vicariously through everyone here.

Robin

Welcome Robin!

The first hurdle is deciding what you want and now you are on your way! I am looking forward to some campfires and open house tours this, my first summer and fall with an A/S. Enjoy and happy hunting!

Thanks.

You're right. We've spent a lot of time trying to figure out what we wanted but once we stepped inside kayakcampers trailer we knew we'd found 'the one' we want, now, if we can only find it quickly since I feel liked I've already waited 2 years with the wrong trailers!

the 66,67 and 68 are pretty similar, except the 66 has the bench type toilet which can be a challenge to replace the toilet.

Dont know if you have looked at vintageairstream.com but the photo archives helped me decide on the" perfect coach" or you can come visit my 68.

I have a 10' shasta also they are pretty cool only mine needs lots of work!

Good luck in your search.

Kevin

There are several Air Streamers in Ga and are happy to assist you. I was at Stone Mt and noticed your camper and should have introduced myself. Regardless of the model you choose first decide how much work you are willing to put in it and make sure you feel you have the ability to do much of the work. As you start working there seems to me like you just want to keep going. Today I am replacing my tail lights in my 76 with LED's. Good luck.

Yes, we're familiar with restorations as we started with a complete rebuild of 1963 Shasta Compact. I thought it was going to be the perfect little trailer since we previously only camped boondock style but then we started attending rallys and discovered she was too little unfortunately that was after thousands of hours of work. :P we recently sold her and then upsized to our 16' trailer. I was convinced I wouldn't miss not having a shower but after a year camping in it I knew I did want a shower so we started the hunt again.

There are pros and cons to all the different make/models of trailers but since I know it HAS to be vintage I know there's going to be a lot of work involved...I just wish I had started with the right one to begin with.

On the positive side, since our driveway confines us to about 26' I know we won't be upsizing yet again and so this will be our last trailer that we'll be putting so much time and energy into.

I'm sorry that you didn't pop over GAT, I'm finding that I like that the local airstreamers are so much more plentiful than the Shasta group, we even discovered that someday59 is less than a mile from us.

kevinb, yes, we like that bench style toilet despite its inherent difficulties...that leg space is a luxury when you've been forced into a 1' sq box! haha We would enjoy seeing your shasta (what year?) and airstream in person...even though I've looked at all the archive pics, it's the only way to truly know the space.

Welcome 247stream! I was just wondering what it was about kayakcampers trailer that made you want it? I mean, was it a particular floorplan? Sorry if you already posted this, I didn't see it and was curious.

The 2 bigs things that sold us on the '66 were the openness of the commode and the angle of the kitchen counter. I also like the dark wood with its fewer windows.

We're going to look at a '67 this weekend so we'll be able to compare that to the '66.

thanks kevin for letting us view your '68 tradewind. i think i'd be happy with any vintage (correct sized) model airstream if i found it in the condition you found yours! i believe you've helped me broaden my search but i suspect it will still take longer than i want it to.

It was really nice to meet you guys,I'm glad the visit helped. Good idea to take your time and find the coach you really want, and you have a nice camper you can use until then.

we went to see a '67 overlander which turned out to be a '68 but the frame actually had holes in it so there was no way we would tackle that. however, it was good to see the tradewind one day and the overlander the next. i think the more i look the more i realize i'll be happy with either model spanning over the mid 60 years. now i guess my big thing will be getting it as complete as possible. now what was that aireseneca was saying about deciding on what i want? i believe the laughs on me. haha
