Hello from England

Hi everyone. Just bought a 76 Safari which I'm picking up next week. I'm a contractor and my wife is a costum jewellery designer. We have 3 kids who are badgering me to take them on a trip in the Airstream! Don't see any around here, so I'm looking forward to taking it out on the road.

Welcome to the forums. I give you a lot of credit for wanting to drive a trailer on those roads of yours. The times I have been there driving was the farthest thing from my mind, the roads are so narrow.
Good luck to you and have many happy camping trips.

Hi Jamie and Family,

welcome on board of the Airstream World!! We are a small crowed here in Europe, but there are several Airstreams in the UK. I have enclosed you a list with the known to me Airstreamers in Europe. Perry from Airstreameurope will add some people he knows who are missing in that list. If you know someone who is not on the list it would be great if you could PM me, as we want to get the list as complete as possible...
BTW: Where did you buy your Airtsream??

Tell us your story and show us some pics. People on this forums love pics!!!!

Again welcome

Stefanie and Bjoern

Airstream in UK

Guys
I'm sorry I didn't back back to you sooner, I didn't realise you had posted a reply....new to this forum stuff!
I found my Airstream in England through surfing the net. So I searched for american caravans and found a woman called Sarah-Jayne in Wichester who imports Airsteams, carries out any necessary modifications you need and hey presto - an airstream ready to roll.
I had the axles changed on mine, because I didn't want the electric braking system also the hitch was changed to a UK spec. I also had the trailer electrics converted to 240volt and some additional sockets added, which means I have 12v, 110v & 240v onboard. Because I have three kids, I had a small bunk put in. I did put some pictures on the forum a few weeks ago. If you want more, let me know!
Towing on our roads hasn't caused a problem yet! Mine is a 76 Safari and 7'6.5" wide, so thats OK. I'll steer clear of some of country roads around here though, because some are really narrow!

Hi Fred,

I did the list by searching all airstream related forums... If you want please use it on your blog and if you or others here know european airstreamers that are not on that list please send me a pm that we can keep the list up-to-date!

All the best from hot (too hot) Berlin

Thumbs up Good morning everybody

Another Brit hopefully joining the ranks.
Am looking for a nice airstream to import to Manchester, England UK.
Have been looking on ebay but there isnt really enough time allowed to make a researched buy i feel! and arrange shipment etc.
Have a little concern with regard to widths of the various trailers as limited to less than 2.3 metres (7 feet 6 and one half inches)wide in UK to be legal!
If anyone can point me to a listing of the various widths for the older trailers i will be most grateful.
Am in process of getting shipping quotations and also looking for someone to trailer the trailer to an shipping port.
Well, short and sweet for the first thread.
Adios
Ian

Welcome Ian!!

Hope to see you on the european roads soon... Give Richardt from the forums a PM, he has sold to us and to other european forum members. He is a nice and helpfull airstream maniak... Great to deal with! You can also search the Classifieds here on the forums... I am not shure where I read something about the width of the trailers, but I think it was on the Homepage of Airstream Europe. It was one of the answers in the faq´s... Try it here...

If you have any questions, don´t hesitate to ask! Just post the question here on the forums or send me or the other fellow euro-streamers a PM.

Again, welcome on board!!

Bjoern

Ian, welcome to the forums from across the pond. Use the search feature above on the blue bar. I seem to rememeber reading a thread about "trailer widths" some time back, but I can't recall exactly the details. Seems like Airstreams were all 7'6" wide up to a certain date, I think, then went to the 8' width. You can also search for threads on exporting to Europe/overseas. I know it's been done several times by folks who are members here.

Jim

I wish I would of had my AS when I was in England. It is a lovely place to visit. My wife was from Torquay. Happy camping - never know - I might come to visit one day - still have a daughter in Cambridge.

Small engines is not the American way, can't brag about speed or power with a small engine, that will change due to new green concepts of using fuel. Distances and terrain in U.S. is totally different than UK, we visit dealers for warranty work greater than the width of England.

Thanks for comments - it's the cost over here -
We have an US ex gulf war command station, cummins diesel - great engine but guzzzles fuel.
Were all being conned in the UK by the government - Recent legislation in our county- they're going to charge us for parking at work- even though the company owns the land
We cant drive this truck to London otherwise we have to pay approx. $500 extra for one trip or an annual levy - Which isn't worth it Its getting worse ! The Government here has used the green issue as an excuse to squeeze money out of the motorist.

My guess would be the new ones, sprinter van with small engines.

From posts I have read in the MH section of this forum most seem to have 454 chevy or similar.

Maybe you could find one with dead engine and put in a smaller one, if you don't have any hills or need of speed, most have more power than needed for slow flat roads.

Given up on motorhome

Hi Ive given up on the idea of a motorhome -
we'll buy a trailer instead
We have a Military landrover 101 forward control Ambulance that'll pull it

I need to get in touch with an Honest Decent Family type Airstream Dealer who can inspect one and ship out to me in England
Want one approx 24-26 ft - In excellent condition
Interior renovated to tasteful standards i.e. no crabby patterns that makes you feel your on mind bending drugs !
With a plain awning thats in good nick
Oh - do these have generators on board ? That would be handy pandy
I suppose Im talking about an older model as the newish ones will cost an arm and a leg - don't know why I said that - Im vegetarian - it made me feel sick !
So - If anyone out there fits the bill - send me an email -
