Smile Hello from a pair of newbies

I wrote a new thread yesterday but it never got posted.....so I will try again.
We are health care workers, about 5 or so years from retirement. We wanted to start traveling now while we still can.
We have never owned an RV. We found pet boarding for our dog and cat was several thousand dollars a year. Airfare and hotels were many times more.
We decided to take the leap and we will pick up an Airstream Interstate Nineteen 4X4 2019 in early December.
We loved the 24 footers but we do visit many major cities and wanted to be able to park in regular parking spots, hence the nineteen footer.
This model was impossible to find, but fortunately one fell into our lap.
Hopefully we will see you on the road.

Welcome from Colorado: You might enjoy visiting here again. Congratulations on your new coach. I have a good friend here who has 4 doggies and likes to travel. He finds his motor coach works out for them very well. He made a U shaped "dog pen" that encompasses the entry door to their rig. Then he can let the dogs out by just opening the door if they are parked on grass. They are little 5 pound Yorkies. Not very messy.

Thanks for the welcome, question for all.

Dealer is pushing us to buy extended warranty coverage - $8,995 for 6 years of protection. Since Airstream already provides 3 years of coverage, the $8,995 will be for years 4,5,6 or about $3,000/year X3.
Seems I would be better putting the $8,995 in a mutual fund for 6 years and use the funds for repairs for years 4-6 and beyond.
Things will likely start breaking down after the 6 year extended service plan runs out so if I leave the $8,995 in the mutual fund to grow, I think I would be better off and still afford to pay for repairs.

I would agree. Those first 3 years you’re going to work out the lion’s share of the bugs (and you’ll have some - hopefully not a lot, hopefully nothing serious - but you’ll have coverage just in case). Smarter to put the funds in a savings/growth vehicle.

No to the extended warranty. That's an awful lot of money for 3 years of coverage especially after the debugging of the first three years. Learn to do a lot yourself. You will learn the systems and how they work. Let's face it, you care more about your trailer than the dealer does.

Most things will be minor and not require your dealer. The very best of luck with your new rig!

Welcome to the forum.

Warranty - WOW, That is a lot of money. Normally, I would suggest considering a warranty extension, as vehicle failures can be expensive, but not at that cost. Your approach is well founded.

While folks use the dog runs, most RV parks require that your dogs be under control at all times. Some specify leash, some are picky about your dog using their grass as a bathroom, and some just ignore everything unless there is a complaint. So read the rules, keep the dogs quiet and observe the prevailing flavor of the park. Generally, a lot of folks have pets and you will meet many kindred souls. We can't believe how many pups have been saved from the kill centers by folks in the RV community.

Good luck with the shake down trips. Travel safe and with a smile. Pat

Dog

Our dog is an AKC titled registered therapy dog. He is under control and on a leash at all times. I don’t like dog owners who let their dogs roam freely.
