Hello everyone from the Buckeye state

We took the plunge last week and picked up a 25' Tradewind twin bed coach. We were staying in North Carolina for a few weeks when I saw it for sale. It is completely origional from what I can tell, but I'm sure it will need a complete redo. I'll put up pics as soon as wifey shows me how.

This won't be our first camper, only our first Airstream.

I'm 62 and out of work, most likely for good so I think this will be a welcome project.

The AS is still in Carolina. I plan to go and pull it home in a few weeks. I'll take some tires with me and get the brakes and bearings checked out before hitting the road.

One question if I may. The shore power plug is a 15A 250V 2 pole 3 wire grounding plug. Can anybody tell me why that is so?

Thanks for the help and hope I can contribute.

Regards, Paul.

Greetings from the Florida Panhandle

Welcome to the Forums. We're glad to have you with us.

I can't imagine why this trailer would have other than a 120 volt electrical cord. Is there some kind of electrical splitter unit in the trailer that brings in 220, and splits it into two 110's?

Brian

So, it has 2 flat prongs in the same plane and a rounded ground prong, like the picture below?

My guess would be that someone may have had this trailer hooked up at home and did a home-handyman outlet for it and used a plug and receptacle intended for an old 220V window unit or something like that. It wouldn't make sense for a PO to have modified the trailer to actually use 220V power, there'd be so many things they'd have to change and I don't think they could get an RV AC unit for 220V at all. Then you'd always need an adapter away from home, because any campground would have 30A and/or 50A normal RV receptacles.

The good news is that the 30A 120V RV plugs are readily available, you can buy a plug that can be wired onto the end of your existing shore-power cord, or you can buy a whole new shore-power cord with a molded plug (more durable) and wire it in on the trailer end (potentially more work.)

We are new owners of a 74 Overlander and in Newark, Ohio. We have lots to learn and would love to keep in touch with all of you. We have it scheduled to have the wheel bearings packed and brakes checked out on the 27th. Still in the "checking things out" phase.

welcome fellow Ohioan

We are located in LaGrange, only a few minutes away! We have a fine group of Airstreamers that live within a few minutes. We often have driveway rallies at our house. We have full hookups available right here. Several folks have come for their first AS campout!
Larry says that he has a 30 amp/120 RV plug with a pigtale on it if you would like to borrow it to go and get your trailer. PM us and we can talk.

Here a link to the spot that some of us post to when we are off on a weekend campout...hoping that some more of our Airstreaming friends will join us. http://www.airforums.com/forums/f290...tml#post890669

When you get it home; this is the proper setup for the shore power, note that it is for RV (travel trailer use only). You should also get a voltage tester to make sure the power source is wired properly. The trailer is 120 volt, not 240 volt.

Thanks to everyone for the welcome. Looking forward to getting togeather with those close by. It will be a while before the AS is camping ready but we still would like to attend your events if we can.

When I saw that 250v plug on I couldn't understand why it would be like that. Guess I will just take 30A 120V plug with me when we go back to pick it up.

Thanks for the help on the power cord.

Regards, Paul.

Don't understand it either. Thougth maybe they were putting 220 to the AC. Can't say about the splitter as it's not here to look at. If it does have some sort of splitter it won't hurt to put 110 to it, some stuff just won't work.( I think ).
