April 4th, 07- have just aquired a 1972 25 foot Tradewind- been dreaming of owing an Airstream forever-so very excited- It was delivered last Friday and has been snowing ever since so havent had much of a chance to play with the new toy but looking forward to it. Would like someday to tow with a late sixties-early seventies full size sedan- any recommendations as to what the best car would be for the job?

Welcome to the forum and world of Airstreams gtijwler. I am pretty sure I saw that trailer advertised in the Buy and Sell a few weeks back and it sounded like a very nice unit.

As for a vintage type of tow vehicle there are several threads ongoing right now, on and off, and two of those are:

Towing with a vintage vehicle is a ton of fun and adds another layer of nostalgia to the whole vintage trailer concept. Looking forward to pictures of your trailer.

We love towing our Tradewind with our '71 Buick Centurion convertible. Of course a 'full size' sedan would be perfect. Avoid the few front wheel drive cars of that era. Enjoy your Tradewind!

As to a vintage tow vehicle, you might want to look at Buick sedans and station wagons of the 60's and 70's. They had very large engines and a bunch of curb weight, which makes condusive to pulling a vintage Airstream.

Good Choice!. I have been having a great time renovating and updating my 25' tradewind. so far it has been upolstry, tambour doors, locks for the battery compartment, furnace and a couple of things I am forgetting. With luck this year is new axels & shocks, main awining, new lights and a couple of fantastick vents. I forgot--an okay (not top line) sound system. In other words it is a hobby that keeps me learning and busy.

Hopefully you won't need to do as much as I have but I want it in first class shape for a year or two vacation in a couple of years. These things are really well built and parts are not all that difficult to come by. I think you will love it. the more I get done on it the better I want the next projeect to go.

Oh and by the way, you can take it camping too!

I sent before I finished! Try something with a long wheel base like an old Caddy or Lincoln with levelers. Andy (Inland RV) mentioned to me that these models can be pulled by a car when I was ordering axels.

I recall pulling a rather large cargo trailer with my old 61 Killer Fin Caddy on about 1974. It pulled the dually without any problems that I recall, the exception was that the gas milage sucked with that trailer behind us and the gas shrtage had just hit. It was something ridiculus like 60 cents a gallon.

I als recall pulling that same trailer with a Dodge Coronet and the trailer would move the car a bit. Look for some serious V8 and a long wheel base for best results (but get a modern brake controller ).

Once again...good choice I hope you enjoy yours as much as )or more) than I have enjoyed mine.

make sure you put in the biggest trans cooler you co put in it also get a 4 core radiator for more cooling.and air shocks to help level the car. simple mods to help you enjoy your camping trips.
