Brand new Bambi 2 owner - brake stabilizers?

Just literally this weekend picked up my under reno Bambi 2 (1964). I towed it with no stabilizer, but someone is suggesting I get one for a drive to Montana. This is a weencie tiny thing, do I need a stabilizer?

Hi, montanajg. I would say yes unless your GMC Sierra is a 3/4 ton quad cab Diesel. Just my opinion.

Welcome to the forums! Bambi's and Bambi -2's are great little trailers.

I am not sure what you mean by "brake stabilizer".
The basics fow towing are:

1. Brake controller - activates the brakes on the trailer from your truck
2. Weight Distribution Hitch - Evens the hitch weight on your truck
3. Anti Sway Device - Prevents sway in your trailer.

Items 2 & 3 may be one device.

Can't hurt and it's only a couple of hundred bucks- cheap insurance when some knucklehead cuts you off and you have to swerve....

Towing your trailer without any load equalizing hitch or brakes, is an "accident" advertizing for a place to happen, sooner than you think.

Do you mean brake controller? Your trailer must stop itself and this is never more important than in emergency or quick stop situations. Stop hard with just the tow vehicle brakes and the trailer keeps coming -- you would understand how dicey it would get if your trailer & tow vehicle swapped ends.

Andy, I would like to know this as well. The stated tow vehicle for this new member is a GMC Sierra. Just for the sake of discussion, we'll assume it is a 1500. The trailer in question is a Bambi II 1964, 17'. Bambi II's weigh in at 2500 pounds or less when loaded to travel. Most equalizer hitches have weighted bar ratings of 500 pounds, concerning hitch weight. Would this not be overkill? I am confused here. Also, there are many pictures of WALLY himself NOT using equalizing bars or sway controls. Perhaps he didn't know better either.
