After lurking on this site for a long time, I registered today and am going to start leaning on the vast knowledge that seems to float around here! My wife and I have been looking at Airstreams for about 4 years now and narrowed down what we want, the costs, and how we'll get there. The classic motorhomes hold the most appeal to us and are now shopping for that one we can make local trips here in Florida as we ready for a full restoration. No telling how far we'll have to go to get it, but Our requirements are:
- Either the 280 or 310 model
- Must be Diesel powered
- Exterior in good to very good condition
- Interior - okay
- Systems - on par with a 25+ year old coach
I have a significant interest in the more rare diesel models given the MPG's, longevity, and my own experience of owning and driving oil-burners for over 20 years. Rebuild is not out of the question with my current mechanic telling me he's done a few of these Isuzus and can easily make some more mustard with a Powermax turbo, bigger injectors, and an intercooler.
Down the road the labor of love will likely include a full frame-off resto with an interior matching those of the new Internationals today. The light colors combined with the aluminum interior, bamboo floors, and LED's will be the style.
My next mission is to figure out what years / models got the diesels, the config of the Isuzus used, and which transmissions came out.
