Another Newbie from NC

Hello,

New to the world of Airstream... In fact still looking for that first one! Hoping to find a early-to-mid 70's, 23 to 25 footer in polished, restored condition in sound mechancial and operational order.

We're planning to pull it with a vintage, restored Chevy Suburban. Should be fun if we ever find that Airstream!

Your post reminds me of something.

Back in the 70's the Atlanta Braves would have a "city" day, and if you were from that particular city, you'd get a ball cap. My uncle had a Suburban, and we all packed up, my cousins and me, to go get our ball caps and watch the Braves.

As luck would have it, some other team, and I'll never remember who, clobbered the Braves that day. It was pitiful. We decided to sneak out early.

A few hundred other people did, too.

As we left the stadium, my five-year-old cousin looked around and said, in a loud voice, "Daddy, where's the 'burban?"

An older couple looked at my cousin with some shock and consternation.

He's married now and has children of his own, and I often quote his innocent question when I get the chance.

So glad another person has the "bug"! While you are searching for that perfect Airstream for your needs.... may I suggest you check out the rally schedule and see if there are any near you. It would be a great time for you to go and check out other Airstreams and see what folks like about their year/model! In the meantime, do your homework! Read through the forums on all kinds of issues to see what kind of problems exist.

There is a good thread on considerations when buying an airstream. Link is below. The list is generally for newer Airstreams, but the basic ideas remain the same, whether new or vintage.

Hi Lamar,

Those old Suburbans are great, no doubt. Ours is in the finishing stages of restoration - the last pieces of new chrome trim are being put on and new carpet going in. It's a 1975 and what began as a paint job a year ago has evolved into a full-blown ground up restoration. We bought from a fellow in McDonough, Georgia a couple of years back. Now we're looking for that "perfect" Airstream to go with it.

You might look up RichardT in the meber section and give him a shout. He's in Hendersonville, N.C. and probably has something that fits. I bought my 69 Overlander from him, and he was fair, honest and true to his word. He also took time to show me his entire "collection" and go over pro/cons of the different models with myself and then my wife and I to help us make a good choice as we are new to the AS world.

The Chevy is a two-wheel drive, with a 350, with a tailgate - essentially a big box on wheels. I'll post up some pix soon.

Dennis, my last 'burb was a 350 2 wheeler with barn doors. I love the barn door option as it's so much easier to get at things you are trying to reach in the back.
My first one was a 1978 with a 454 that blew away Camaros.
