Almost new airstream owner

I'v been looking for an Airstream for quite some time now. Looked at a 68 International Overlander today. I will probably make an offer tomorrow. It's a little rough on the inside, although I was planning on a complete renovation anyway, considering my price range. The shell looks great except for the modified windows. Someone built box windows that pop out of the sides. The original frames look intact, so just a matter of finding the right windows for it. It looks like a rewire and re-plumb job though. If I can get my price I think I can make it nice.

Check for floor rot especially at the back.

Watch Out for Those Windows

If they monkeyed with skin and ribs beneath, it may be difficult to make it right. Be prepared to walk away. There are lots of Airstreams out there. Good luck with your decision.

floor seems solid throughout and skin underneath looks like it has never been touched. I'm wondering if my '99 GMC Yukon will pull it.

Well there are lots of places for rot to hide. Better to find out now than have that sinking feeling in your stomac when you discover some hidden problems. Laminate flooring or linoleum can hide a lot of bad things. It is rare to find a 20yr old trailer without major issues and this one is twice that age. Expect to do some major work and pay accordingly. If yours is problem free you would be in a statistically small group.

A word of caution regarding the windows. The windows utilized in 1968 were only utilized for a short period of time -- 1966 through 1968. These windows are referred to as Corning Tempered Glass Windows and both the glass, hinges, and frames are virtually unobtainable today -- reproduction glass is available, but quite expensive. If the coach needs all new windows and hardware, you may be looking at a very big job that could become quite expensive. My suggestion would be to have someone who has knowledge of the 1966-1968 windows look at the coach with you to see just what would be necessary to restore the windows.

Good luck with your research and investigation!

Kevin
