If they don't want you, stay someplace else! Life is too short to get upset over stuff like that.

Some of the nicest parks around are Corps of Engineers campgrounds— and they're also among the most affordable. Forty-four of our fifty states have CoE campgrounds in them, so there's no shortage of choice.

The Federal Government doesn't have a 10-year-old rule, and won't turn you away unless there is an obvious safety hazard on your trailer— or unless they're fully booked. You can find Coe campgrounds by consulting the Corps Lakes Gateway: Corps Lakes Gateway

It is typically due to appearance standards...talk to the park manager, send them a pic and most likely things will be ok. If not, as Protagonist said, move and find a place like likes cool classics.

Their loss, not yours...

I can understand the gist of the rule, but I also can understand being "allowed" to stay with your vintage camper if it's "good enough".

My first inclination is to stay somewhere else.

I have a ’67 Safari... never had a park that had their “10-year rule” turn me down. Several asked for a picture and then welcomed me with open arms. Most of the time, the rule is aimed at keeping contraptions held together with baling wire & duct tape from homesteading...

Of course... RV “resorts” with manicured grass and slide-outs peering down on top of me aren’t often the kind of places I want to be seen in anyway...

Texas has some of the best state parks in the country and they always are a great deal on a large site with lots of space. When we plan a trip we try to find one even for the quick overnight runs to far away places.

I'll second the recommendations for both Corps of Engineers and state parks in Texas. The State Park Pass card pays for itself if you stay in enough state parks in the year. You get half off the 2nd night for 4 stays, and you pay ONLY the camping fees for other nights. The pass covers entry or day use fees that can be $5-$10/day on top of the (generally low) camping fees.

Thumbs up

We stay away from "parks".......

And prefer "camp sites"....

Now that the Classic is 12yrs old I'm sure we will continue the tradition.

Couldn't agree more!! We do the same. And I always laugh when they say our trailer is too old. It's valued more than 90% of what's at the parks. Those places always have a bunch of other strange rules anyway. Like no pets. Or only 2 adults per site.

99% of non Airstream owners can not tell a 40 year old Airatream trailer from a brand new one.

Look into the Escapee parks (escapees.com). Half of their parks are "Rainbow Parks", where anyone can camp, while the other half are "Co-Ops" where only Escapee members (not necessarily co-op leaseholders) can camp. Daily rates are between $18-$20 and their weekly & monthly rates in some parks bring the cost of camping down to less than $10/night (+electricity & taxes). Their only caveat is that you have to have a waste tank (portapotties are not allowed).

Since your AS is self-contained, there are also places where you can camp (boondock) for free - look into BLM. Escapees also can subscribe to "Days End", a listing of low-cost/free camping. The list is currently just under 800 pages long and covers the USA & Canada.

That attitude turns me off so I usually just go somewhere else. Once, to amuse myself, I told them my '90 Excella was a 2005 Special Edition Commemorative model. They were impressed.

Cheers,
John

Some of these newer "RV Resort", parks that are springing up in our area, in southern Alabama, (Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, etc), are getting to be so exclusive that you have to have either a large moho, or 5th wheel, and they have to be relatively new.
Travel trailers, including Airstreams are not allowed regardless of the age of the unit.

Judging from the people whom we've met from these parks, I would just as soon not stay in those parks anyhow. Most of them are so self centered, they don't like to associate with us common people.....they are very impressed with themselves and little else.

Shame on them!

I was reading an online review of a RV park the other day and the women who wrote it must have said Prevost at least a dozen times:

"Our Prevost barely made the turn..."
"It was a little tight for our Prevost..."
"The Prevost was a little cramped the space..."

And the final:

"We visited in a Prevost motor coach.""

Perhaps the ultimate perversion of "camping". I feel sorry for the poor woman.

Cheers,
John

You have to understand that the 10 year rule is not geared toward Airstream's but toward SOB's. In most cases when I travel regardless where I stay I have the only Airstream in the place and without a doubt the oldest RV in the park. It does not look like the oldest one but if there is an SOB there that is 10 years or older it is for sure showing its age, trailer or MH. So more and more of RV parks are trying to keep these out, I don't blame them. But our Airstrem's get caught up in the "10 year" rule. So keep it looking good and lie.

Troy,
I don't tell them unless they ask. When I arrive I always offer a tour inside. When the appearance is good there are smiles and the "Ok, nice Rig! Glad to have you!"

And we are in Texas.

When they get tight a€€ about it I say, "your park is obviously going to be unacceptable. I will spread the word to save you more phone calls."

Also I hit them up with "how old is your park? When was last time you have your pedestals and water supply checked? Have you resolved the discrepancies? Does your septic system meet current CODE?"....."how do you handle insurance claims for damage caused by your electric or water supply?

I do understand what the ten year rule is attempting to do. On park we stopped at last summer, the reservations clerk said "I didn't know they still made these! I invited her in and she couldn't believe the interior. When I told her they have be building them since the middle 1930's, and they are currently backordered at least 90 days for a new one, she was amazed....

I have to laugh when people are looking for their first older unit, and they hear the prices of a ten year old 30'er that price is usually close to a new 30' SOB...I guess I have a warped sense of humor...

Life is good.
