53 FC Newbie

Well almost. I am picking up a 53 Flying Cloud (O 3099) this weekend. This will be my first. It's in fairly decent shape (I think). We'll see if it will make the tow home from Fort Worth TX to McKinney TX (about 1.5 hours). Any tips on preparations for the tow will be much appreciated. I am planning on checking wheel bearings, tire pressure, lights, etc...

Just wanted to introduce myself and I look forward to this new adventure.

Congratulations!

Check the tires...if they are more than 5 years old, get new ones before you head out. Trailer tires often "age out" before they "wear out".

Safe travels...post pics when you can ~

Welcome and congrats on the find.

I am deep in the restoration of my 53 Flying Cloud, and have recently taken the shell off the frame and axle off the chassis. Don't let it get you down, but It's most likely going to need a lot of work.

I second the new tires comment. I should have brought new tires along. I would bring a floor jack as well, and temporary lights for towing. My jack was rusted solid and wouldn't move at all.

Check out my blog for all the work I have done, and hopefully what you won't have to do.

Steve

Welcome,

I live in Allen.

I am in the middle (well some where, I am bewtween the start and the finish, as middle implies close to half done) of a restore of a 1950 Flying Cloud.

I would be glad to provide what little knowledge I have gained in the process.

As for tires, if you buy new ones, you may end up not using them depending on the rims and wheels you end up using. You will see on many old restores, axles, wheels, rims and tires are replaced.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and helful tips. My 'cloud' is home now and the trip was quite smooth and uneventful. You can find the details in my post under the 53 flying cloud sub-forum. I'll post pics later...
