Question 1981 Airstream Excella Motorhome

This one has an Isuzu diesel engine, which is why I bought it. It get consistent 14+ mpg and runs great if a bit loud.

I wonder why this forum does not list 1981 Excella? Nameplate says it is 1981.

Would like to hear from owners of similar units.

It should not run loud, you've either got an exhaust leak, loose valves or a number of chassis issues. That is one bullet-proof engine. Here's our first mo/ho, a '79 280. Depending on the mileage, I be changing the upper and lower fuel filters. Bess has gotten 15 mpg consistently with no oil burning. She has over 240,000 miles.

Welcome to the group Jim. I have two 280 diesels parked in my driveway. The 280 seems to be the most common Airstream moho with the Isuzu diesel. A few 310's are on the site. Most all the others have a 454 gas engine. There is an odd Cummins and one guy put a DuraMax in one. Lots of knowledge to be found here when you need it. An over-drive unit keeps the engine roar down and provides a more comfortable road speed.

We like lots of pictures.

Cheers, Dan
