It should not run loud, you've either got an exhaust leak, loose valves or a number of chassis issues. That is one bullet-proof engine. Here's our first mo/ho, a '79 280. Depending on the mileage, I be changing the upper and lower fuel filters. Bess has gotten 15 mpg consistently with no oil burning. She has over 240,000 miles.
Welcome to the group Jim. I have two 280 diesels parked in my driveway. The 280 seems to be the most common Airstream moho with the Isuzu diesel. A few 310's are on the site. Most all the others have a 454 gas engine. There is an odd Cummins and one guy put a DuraMax in one. Lots of knowledge to be found here when you need it. An over-drive unit keeps the engine roar down and provides a more comfortable road speed.
